Variety Club is not a pace setter...he has natural gate speed and a natural high travelling speed throughout races, and then he has a finish as well! He is a 1600m specialist, maximum 1800...we all saw what happened in the Derby against Jackson. As for Captain America...he can never keep up with Loius and Legislate and some other horses running in the July...they will run past him like he is standing still! He is a one paced plodder and he should be ridden from the front by Cormack if he wants to stand a chance. In fact, IMO, CA will be the pace setter for the race...Futura will need a good pace to suit him! (:P) Don't be too technical over weights...good horses can overcome a kg or 3 turnaround in weights. :)-D

Ken, without realising it, you are answering the puzzle yourself. That's exactly what you want your fancy to do in a race, idle around but stay in touch, so when push comes to shove, s/he still has enough left in the tank to out-sprint/outlast the others, not to empty out before the winning post.

Break a leg.
Guessing has never been widely acclaimed as a good gambling strategy.
