And NONE of it would be possible without generous people, big and small, who supported the run.

A lot of the horses that end up there are bred by the cattle guys (not the farmers) in Lesotho and on the farms around Newcastle. They are mixed breed horses mainly bred to round up cattle and pull carts. Unfortunately they also sometimes end up in neglectful situations.

Craig, thank you for taking care of this horse. Looking 500% better, but the pic you posted of when he was first picked up by the CHCU.....that makes me sick to the stomache. I love horses and in fact ALL animals, so i hope these owners can somehow be prosecuted!!!

Thank you guys. Carey was the 1 who offered our services to CHCU when Vanessa spoke to her about how bad a condition they were in. I also hated to see how an animal could be allowed to get into that condition but with good food, care and lots of TLC the results have turned out beautifuly. The Vets(DR Jess) Farrier(Dean and team) and Dentist (Graeme Martin) also did what they could but it was Carey who put it all together and I just did what I was told!(pay etc):D I hope we now find him a great home and thanks to Titch for putting up the photo's.

I suppose there will always be horses that end up in the wrong place despite ex-owners and trainers doing their best to find good homes and keep a check on them. We must remember though that there are plenty of horses that retire from racing and go on to do great things in the show ring, being loved as part of someones family. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing that. My girlfriend showjumps and we love watching some of our ex-horses that she has rehomed competing and doing well.

Frank Robinson once had to travel to the Berg to save an ex horse of his that was given to a "good home" after its racing career finished the horse then changed hands multiple times and finally ended up destined for the abattoir, fortunately one of Frank's owner/friends happened to hear the guy mention that the horse was a ex racehorse and asked if he knew the name of the horse and who trained it, once it was confirmed that it was an Ex Brown horse Frank was advised and he promptly traveled up with a float and bought the horse back (had to fork out 5K) despite his very poor condition, and returned it to Sumerveld , when last I heard he was living a regal life in retirement and was Herman's wife's riding horse , the horse in question was multiple winner Eldoriza...
