if i was chippys agent i would not be nicking rides from marcus or lerena or strydom. i would be nicking them from the okes that ride 1 per meeting and dont have agents to spend hours on the fone for a scrubber.

Make a nuisance of yourself on the phone and you wont get an answer when next you call

I am not talking about being a dick I am talking about showing an interest in the trainers other passtime. Pretty standard marketing of course you don't irritate the trainer. But someone farms aize you can go a lomng way by 1st checcking the rainfall in the area before calling. A little ice breaker and yiu get a ride

As a trainer I put on the best I can if the horse has a winning chance or who I think would suit the horse or who rides my work. I am not a person who will put on a jockey who could ride some work but doesnt. If he walks past me without asking if he can take one, then when it comes to scratchings I will not put him on unless really have to. It is amazing how many calls I get on scratchings days from agents asking if their jockey or apprentice can ride my horse. Normally ask them to send a picture of said jockey or apprentice to remind me of what he/she looks like!

Craig 10000 % that's why a good agent will also encourage a jockey to put in the hours in the morning. As I said earlier the jock got to do his bit as well.

Easy, a lot of jocks dont earn themselves 15 g a month so of course thet cant pay an agent at all...... they gotta do their own rides obviously

i would guess that in S.A. 10 % OF JOCKS ARE REALLY WELL OFF, next 20 - 25 % are doing O.K. but as for the rest of them........... they battling their arses off WHY..................... TOO MANY JOCKS in S.A. TOO many appies coming thru........ some even far too heavy as appies.... they will not last.............. & too few horses in races.............. no more 20 runners down the OLD VAAL STRAIGHT.

it's a tough world out there being a jock & self employed.................... couple of current battling jocks have asked ELVIS JNR to be their agent................ I said dont waste your time... 10 % comm. on a battling jock is just not worth it........... the phone calls alone...BLOODY EXPENSIVE.

Look at it this way:

1: would chippy travel to jhb for 1 ride a 33/1 shot?

Answer probably not.

That 1 ride could be the catalyst for a barrage of rides.

My point is you need to invest to make it pay.

Travel
Etc etc etc

So a target of 1100 rides a year will still yield 7% winners and he will show commitment

You have no idea what I will do or have done, so please don't make assumptions. My expansion into PE is proof enough + the reason why I pick up so many rides there when jocks are indisposed on the day.

The job of an agent is simple, ask for the best available ride and put his jock forward for horses open at decs. The answer is YES or NO.
The more one tries to convince a trainer to use a certain jockey, the more it backfires for both parties. People are tired of B@lls41t talk

If it goes well, Great, but 9 out of 10 get beat and then the trainer is sour coz that jock wasn't his "1st choice" and will hesitate to put him up again.
Any agent on the phone for an hour to 1 trainer for 1 ride is wasting time, money + effort that could be used phoning for another 3/4 rides elsewhere.

It is for that reason alone that I will not pay a set amount each month + have offered the extra bonus %. If the agent is doing the correct job then his performance will be rewarded at the end of the month as a jockey/trainer is when receiving their %.

Also the quickest way to the hospital...
Taking mad rides just to make up rides is also the fastest way for agents to get fired!
