never mind the drinking with trainers and the going racing to make relationships.
you might have your way, most agents have to graft to make a living.
THE PHONE does not ring they have to make calls....that takes time and costs money
I can name them for you the lads i worked with only Bruce grey had it easy the rest grafted

anyone taking on Christopher taylors rides will have to work (not having a go at him) its just facts. You need to skills to look at the noms and forget about phoning for many of the noms BUT still make sure you get him on the best possible ride or at least a ride that is going to run.
He does not want to win the championship, he merely wants 600 rides a year and 40 winners, you have to find those 40 winners from 6th and 7th choices in races. do you even imagine how hard that is going to be??

yes easy it helps if u in racing then that all comes with ur lifestyle i suppose..the best is probably for assistant trainers etc..thats how i started..u work in racing, know all the trainers etc as its part of ur job and being an agent is an excellent way to add income..part time..but obviously its up to the person to decide if working for a less successfull jockey is worth the extra 3 or 4 k..in my opinion it isnt..but thats their choice..

that might be the case "to add income" but someone down the pecking order needs more rides because they get kaaker rides so their (your) income is mainly from rides and not stakes.
On another thread i predicted that Muzi would become champion.Because he is putting in the hours and riding 1000's of horses
If chippy had come on here and asked for an agent and had he stated that he wanted to ride >1000 horses a year i could see it being viable.
I think the rides are there to be taken from others, and it is a dog eat dog world.
thats why i can t accept that doing it part time for Chippy does him or the agent any good

If u want a copy of my International CV which includes being the 1st SA jock under 30 to ride in a GR1 at the Dubai World Cup and Qatar Triple Crown success or a list of winners + horses I have ridden for Manchester City Owner HH Sh Mansour bin Zayed al Nayhan or UAE President HH Sh Khalifa bin Zayed al Nayan, feel free to send me your contact details.
@Easy/Sloop, I don't know any agent in SA that earns GBP1200/R15k purely as a booking agent from rides/wins. That would mean the jock is earning R120-R150k per month. Those jocks with sponsors are able to use their "retainer" to pay a little more + hopefully that is where ProSport will make the difference for us.

Chippy
I dont disagree, but surely you want someone that is commited? that costs....you defaulted to R150k a month but maybe its worth your while shelling out the R15k and earning a solid R80k for a year or 2 and then building up your quality of rides and lessining your volume.
I DONT care who you are , if you in lower than 20 on the log you need to be fighting all those other okes/girls for every single ride you can get. Rather you ride 9 a meeting than you 4 , swanepoel 3 and rahilly 2 (example)
for that to be achieved you need a person that is full on and does not take no for an answer, that costs.
the 10% model does not work for a lower rated jockey.....when i did robbie shams rides (about 6 months) he paid me 25% BUT only wanted to ride horses with winning chances (mostly alec laird) He also only wanted to be "in the game" as the property business was well established.
Less rides higher comm...less winners higher comm or a fixed monthly account. You could even have this person as your driver and make our whole life a bit easier BUT i think there is alot of mileage in paying someone R15k a month in your situation.

justinv
mate i know many good agents that left the game because the model of commision does not work for the lower rated jockeys
many people on here dont like me but as an agent i was pretty good. BUT forget me
Tony (did charlie van boomas rides) he is worth R15k a month
Antony (did gunters rides) he is worth R15k a month
Paulo (did donavans ride and then gavin van zyl) he is worth R15k a month
My point is a jockey earning R50k a month will be able to get more rides if he pays someone R15k a month. The jockeys earnings will go from R50k to R80k, so he is financially better off and he is getting 100% support from an agent.
you say i am dreaming, but i am not the one looking for a job. Chippy is not the 1st jockey to come on here looking for an agent, but (i understand) they only want to pay if they earn....thing is you gotta speculate to accumulate.
Pay the money irrespective of rides, work your ass off and in the long run you will succeed and earn more.

i disagree easy..at the end of the day andre hoffman could have jesus as his agent..he still isnt going to ride lots of winners..its up to the trainer to put you on...an agent isnt a miracle worker..just helps if the jock isnt too sharp with form or travels
