Hypothetically, a jockey pulls up a horse, or goes easy on it because it 'doesn't feel right' and afterwards the vets find nothing wrong. Does that make him a hero or an asshat ?

By the sounds of the way the other thread was going, the answer seems to depend on where the horse was lying in the betting.

If the horse is the priority, then IMHO, the jockey's mandate is to ride the horse out to the best of its ability. Included in that mandate is the welfare of the horse. Yes, they may get it wrong, but considering the stakes, would you rather have a live ticket or a dead horse?

Given some of the comments on the other thread, I'd rather leave that as a rhetorical question.

Did Andrew ride the horse out as best he could ? I don't know. I do not know the horse and do not know what it felt like. However, in his professional opinion, based on what the horse felt like to him at the time, Andrew says yes. Chequered history or not, this is the considered opinion of a paid professional. Want to argue ? Let's see you lot on a horse.

TIMELINE

6.35pm Titch announces Andrew will post

6.45pm Andrew posts

6.46 pm Titch replies "I rest my case". I never knew Titch was a lawyer too. We need to wait for the prosecution to close and then we can take it to the jury !

I am not saying Andrew pulled up the horse, just that he gave it a shocking ride, having said that if Andrew were to post that he has never pulled up a horse in his career ........

I can't comment on Mr Fortune's riding skills in that race as I haven't viewed the footage. I must however compliment him on his newly found linguistic skills. His grammar is impeccable and his writing succinctly clear.

Spot on, I told my mates at the tote Andrew will not win this race ( even though he has the better horse) when I notice this betting phenomena which occurred just prior to the start of the race.

Plattner's had 1 horse with Snaith stable Richard Fourie the jock which won & the other horse with Govender's stable Andrew Fortune the jock.
The question is did Andrew ride to instruction which was to win the race only if Fourie's mount is in trouble?
Did the Plattner's have their money on the one that won therefore Andrew peek over to see where was Fourie's mount, Plattner's money horse ?

I think if Andrew did not see Fourie's mount then he would of known that Fourie's horse was in trouble then he would of rode his horse vigorously & he would of won the race, unfortunately he saw Fourie's mount & he knew what to do...nurse his horse over the line to protect the well being of this poor horse...what a joke!

Anyway who are we to challenge the professional jockeys...if they wish to win or loss on a horse it's their prerogative...stop complaining this is horse racing...crooked sport

i dont think andrew new the winner lost 5 lengths at the start and when he was not coming he takes a look to see ,hey were the fok are you ,it would have been perfect if the winner had jumped on terms with them, but thats why this happened it was not planed to jump slow.

I don't think for one minute that the ride in question was "crook" as it would be a very strange way to ride a horse'no good'.
I think that it was one of those rides that was intended to be ,what the commentators refer to,as a "cheeky" ride...ie just doing enough, and it backfired!
I have to say though that this is again a regulation issue.....when I started racing +- 40years ago,it was an offence for a jock to look around,so neither of the above scenarios could have occured, and this argument wouldn't be raging and the integrity of racing wouldn't be under scrutiny.
Nothing is bringing racing more into disrepute right now than the failure to regulate correctly..........If it is a rule that a horse must be ridden out to the line, why would it ever be necessary to look around to assess the distance the following horses are behind you?

I must agree with Rob. I don't think Andrew tried to pull a move and pull the horse up BUT he didn't give the horse a good enough ride to win the race. When a horse moves up with a TON in hand and you sit motionless, you would, 9 out of 10 times expect the horse to go on and win easily. There is the odd occasion where that doesn't happen as the horse falls into a hole...can happen, we have all seen it. However in my simple minded, non jockey, opinion I feel that if Andrew had sent his mount clear with 200/300m to run and gave it all he could I and many others would have been happy had he lost the race. This had not happened in my opinion. How many times in the past have you seen Andrew coast up, not hit the horse once, win cozily and everyone thinks Andrew is the master of timing......Guess it only takes once for that to misfire for people to become a little upset.

I truly hope that it was Andrew who posted and I think we should probably give him the benefit of the doubt that it was indeed him........

Whatever your opinion of the ride, there is nothing we can do now. We can, for ourselves, decide in future to support Andrew or not, to back his mounts or not. He will ride, we will punt...........Whatever!

Happy punting!
