Anticipation, anticipation, anticipation !
That's what the greats have in all sports. Anticipation creates decisions, they seem to have more space because they got themselves into the correct position, they seem to have all the time in the World to perform their split second decisions or actions.
They make it look easy and we all watch them, because their special gift draws us to them, we all base the pending outcome on them, we rely on them, whether their Sport is an individual or a team Sport - they are the ones that stand out, over time.
More often than not, when they do not pull it off, we blame them or we look for chinks in their armour, we suddenly realise that they are human. And when we look again, these Sporting greats are back, at their best and at the helm.
Anticipation is the common denominator, which creates winning situations.
Chris Gayle, Fourie du Preez,Piere Strydom, Anton Marcus and many others from all Sports have this ability.

Spot on Louis...........That INSTINCT which allows champions to see something about to unfold earlier than anyone else!
There are a number of good horsemen, thanks to our instructors, but a top JOCKEY is the one who seldom loses on a horse that should of won.........the top boys are seldom the guys checking and switching when its already too late..........that is something that can't be taught though!
One of the best in this respect was Mark Kahn.........seldom baulked for a run........... Striker,Marcus,Delpech and a few others have it too.

Well put, Rob !
Harry, this is because they dont go too fast that often anymore and more and more courses arent condusive to that way of riding anymore. Germiston yes, oops gone, Turff inner no. Vaal sand no. polytracks no, Greyville no. Newmarket yes, oops, gone.....
The ability to judge the horse's correct pace in relation to the pace of the race. They go to fast, we wait. They dont, we dictate.

the question remains did Lerena intentionally try to block striker or was he unable to control his mount. its not like Striker's odds-on horse was 5l superior to Gavin's. when you come from behind and try to squeeze through narrow gaps you are asking for trouble anyway...

All professional sportsmen adopt an attitude of "what happens on the field stays on the field."

I Used the word deliberately because its an assumption that i make from the start of the race to the end.I think my assumptions can be cleared if we have the opportunity to watch the race HEAD ON from the start.I think from this view you may be able to see Gavin or Strikers intentions.I still feel that gavin was intimidating Stiker during the latter part of the race but EXPERIENCE COUNTS (j&b met day winner for PS) at the end of the day.
