I'm with Craig on this.,....good horses make good trainers great horses make great trainers.....-I have hardly seen an average trainer not identify a good horse once he has it...I feel for the small guys
like even David Neuvenhuis who stumble on a good horse only to see Azzie nominate it for the Dingaans......don't worry Davey I hope you got a share in the sibling as it may be much much better....

their is plenty of good trainers(big and small) but only a few are trainers who know what races to enter their horses....that makes the difference between the shit strike rate and a good strike rate, how many expensive buys never win a race?(example ,today Hollywood Chief ran nowhere after winning 4 out of 5 in kimberley, and MDK couldnt win anything with this R1,5 million yearling)....yes,mdk wins most big races but that is only a small part of all the races that they run.... trainers that know where to enter their horses are Mdk,St john Gray and Carl Burger.....they are top class to name just a few

MDK is a great trainer no doubt but he sure had a gifted beginning, something most trainers can only dream of.
He had Colin Dunn, and all of Ginsberg's (I think that was his name) owners and then also had Oppenheimer ect help him out right in the very beginning.
He knew what to do with it but he surely had some good help right there in the beginning!
Training surely is a very difficult science to perfect. Being only good at it might not be so bad

Briget Oppenheimer phone him the first time (and because he couldnt believe it was really her ,he though it was a pranked call and dropped the phone in her ear......only to realise that it was her when she called back)....and the first horses he trained for her was the time horse chestnut was selected by him on the farm as one of the babies he wanted to train.....that was about 7 years after he got a trainers licence

Tommy
Why did he not lose all those patrons? What seperates the wheat from the chaff? What makes Steve Cyr different to All the other hosts? Why does Craig Eudey use Anton when Africa has no ride in the race? Why are there scratch golfers in EVERY club in the world and only a few on tour?
You may be correct about the good being good enough and something to be proud of BUT nothing is stopping Goodman from refusing the soupmeat and training only 1 horse a year albeit a very good horse.
FOR EXAMPLE read the following, stands his ground and in my opinion is one of the BEST trainers that has ever lived.
check new thread and enjoy

One swallow does not a summer make.....
He was incredibly lucky to have been gifted the stable he was with loyal patrons.
Once again I stress, MDK is a great trainer but he surely was helped out an awful lot in the beginning!

HE might have been "helped" out I would rather say that those that were there had faith in him....
Anyways, either way its the same thing, he still had to deliver! NOTHING is stopping any trainer from delivering, ZERO...........you can be the BEST trainer of 70 rated horses EVER.
Look at Scott Lake in the USA, bet you very few on here have ever heard of him but he fires in more winners numerically than most.
So in a country like South Africa, where > 70% of races are handicaps WHY can a trainer NOT perform???????

I don't disagree Easy merely mentioning that he did have great owners, great stock and a truly privileged beginning in racing.
You are right, he still had to make a go of it, without talent that would not have been possible.
