Is there not some high profile court case here in SA that has or looks like going against the Auctioneers for pulling bids out of the air? Seem to remember reading it a few weeks ago. Dont the big art etc auction houses use paddles?

I like the Gavin Van Zyl deal where he puts syndicates together without having the initial outlay and the cost of the horse is payed back on a monthly bases, it allows the man on the street to get involved with racing.

Hi Muhtiman
I think the fact I am talking to you now means I understand the power of social networking!
I have worked on racecourses and stud farms, studied business and have worked in all major markets around the world. A great business is defined by it's product, how it is promoted and marketed and how the business is led...
We have a great product in our SA bred thoroughbreds, and need to market them and our racing in a more structured and targeted way both locally and internationally.
Why not come to our NYS in April and see how we are improving our game?!
I am about delivery and less talking and more action - we need solutions and to focus all our energies in a positive way to build this industry up one brick at a time!
I would love to hear any ideas you have on how we we can move forward, instead of rehashing old problems!
Cheers

Tom I am glad you understand the power of social networking, it's a step in the right direction, maybe you should educate the operators of the game who have the opportunity to interact with their customers but prefer to ignore.

hello tom
from what i here you must get basics right and treat the customers of yours the breeder properly. a friend of mine has been breeding for many years and he says that he always wait for money to be paid when people dont pay for there horse buy at tba sale. often 6 months or a year after the horse is sold does he still wait for his money. he say the people at tba do not worry about him they say the problem is the buyer who does not pay for hes horse. this put big pressure on the breeder who must pay for everything and gets not paid. my friend say he will now send horses to cape town because they now will garentee the payment of horse at their sale. for me it sound like as long as the tba gets the entry fees they dont care after that. it is no surprise that a lot of big breeders now go to cape town instead of germiston.also i support the paddle idea to show what is bidding against you. i buy a few horses over time and more than once we are stopping at the second last bid on horse. when the horse is sold there is a name like mr smith shown as the owner. but then when the horse run it shows mr beck as the owner and it come from his farm. now the other day geff woodruff buy a jet master for a record price and there is big big stories afterwards and what about the man who is the second last bidder? it is fraud no? this is not good for the integrety of the sale? i do not agree with mr big barry. if you are a genuine buyer then you can show your interest and then people can see yes this is not a crook. so good luck with your job most people think the auction is a fraud so you must work on this

Will do, and already see some changes on the
TBA website, but I'm with Barry on leaving the auction process as is and if people cannot trust the agents or trainers then find a new one or ask some of these pimpernel types on social networks how to navigate the treachery of the system as it stands!!

Our payment process is going to change dramatically going forward - this will be a major focus of our efforts.
In terms of intergrity of the auction we are putting in some process's to protect our ongoing integrity of the auction - this is also needs the input of vendors and buyers alike and is something we need to improve on going forward.

Why not paddles? Good enough for Christies and Southebys etc so why not here too? This would stop " friends" of owners and breeders pushing up prices . If you see this then you can stop bidding. Let them end up buying back more than a few....
If a reserve is unrealistic then it should be brought down. At the recent Cape sale a number of horses did either not get a bid or reach their reserves as were printed in the price list, however the later price lists show the horses sold at less then half the reserve.
Also trainers who buy from the same farms at huge, inflated prices then can take the horses to their yard and sell to their owners at the "sale" price. Some trainers even turnout to own the mares but sell under the farm name .
@ Craig , Rael Levitt and his company have admitted guilt in that they inflated prices with false bids.
PADDLES ARE WHAT KEEPS MANY A BOAT MOVING
Without the small owners and breeders the game will die.

Sham racing you are spot on again - I think there are many people that would have to downsize their lives if the Auctions were to held in the manner suggested by yourselves and others - The deception created by the breeders has brought them to this point but I think that they are not ready for an open market approach - Let the Buyer beware!!! (I know that it's not horse auctions but I have sold over 15000 items using online auctions over the past 7 years so I do know a bit about auctions)

@Mr H I would not paint all the breeders with the same brush
Many are out in the cold and are also victims of the system too. It may be better that Tom Newbie does not know about how things are rather than have some bod expose the works.
