Sham Racing 100%
Not trying to knock you Tom but if you have to ask you have no chance (you must have had a viable plan when you submitted your CV?) - It is common knowledge that new owners are driven away because of the false prices at auctions. Racing cries that people associate it with skulduggery yet the entry point to ownership has been tainted with deception for years - In good times fools don't care - in bad times they become wise. The buyers of today are not as gullible as those of 10 years ago. The breeders that created false markets now reap what they sowed
good luck though you'll need it!

In my opinion horse ownership is very expensive both from buying and upkeep pov. clearly not many ppl can afford to own a horse. so why not make the whole thing affordable?? slash prices (buying, training, vet bills, etc) and then increase the number races. i think we have enough horses to have a double header daily in SA.

Unfortunately we will have to slash prize money then....

With respect to Tom,if he is for real (sorry Tom...a bit cynical) He recognises the wholistic approach needed to bring new owners to the party.
Having got through the auction and now owning a horses,is just the beginning.......as they say in the classics"you ain't seen nothing yet."
My participation will forever be limited to a share or 2 in horses with Clinton Binda................To my ultimate cost
probably,he has made ownership a pleasant experience, but you won't catch me bidding at any auctions anymore!

Buying and paying keep is the easy part, its these vets that are sucking the blood out of the small owners!

Tom....checked out your bio....what are your credentials in horse racing/breeding other than ggg going to school with Tony Millard ? How is your corporate experiences at internationally branded companies going to help in marketing and advertising bloodstock in our local and international markets ?
Has the TBA/BSA finally realized the power of social networking sites and going to use them effectively?
Not trying to be too cynical, but you are going to need much more than good luck, as if it is not broken it don't need fixing, but it is sick and it needs healing!!!

Paddles?
It is nobody's business to find out the identity of anybody that they are bidding against. This would present an unfair advantage.
Reserves are used in most auctions and are not revealed because that would defeat the purpose of having a reserve.
As I wrote earlier, one needs to learn the game, just as one has to learn how to dope form.
If a newcomer needs help, there are trainers and bloodstock agents by the bus load that are willing and qualified to assist buyers.
