I am surprised that all the local studs farm came together. Sometimes they do that when they importing a stallion. Its family, Ciao Bella, won the other day from one of the best lineages in South Africa. Recently, Erik The Red, retired to stand due its pedigree, from the family of Master Of My Fate and Malmoos.

In America, some stallions with Graded 1 places or lower Graded wins have become top stallions due to their pedigree. Into Mischief is the most recent as Beholder its sibling was making headlines when it retired and then came Mendelssohn.

What chance do others have against such a cartel?
This may be the final nail in the coffin. They will race for only whiskey and wine very soon.

Let's see how many run next season in the colours of farms or are raced in partnership with farms - Without new buyers the farms cannot survive buying between themselves - I don't think there are too many people wanting to buy into horses in this economy but perhaps the breeders are hoping that overseas buyers step in if protocols are eased (If I was a buyer in another country I think I would not be rushing to buy here when they have their own top product but perhaps it makes sense with the weak rand)

.....went to take a gander on Wednesday.....place was buzzing....yet most the smaller yards and odd owner have not got a squeak of a chance other than table crumbs....and a hope and prayer that their crumb can possibly top these many over priced sorts.....

Bob, economic rationality does not come into play. Buying a horse in SA is the dumbest economic decision anyone can make. The more horses you have, the more money you lose. So why would anyone be so crazy as to buy a horse, let alone a lot of them? It is because we love this game so damn much! It’s a feeling, not a thought. Like everyone else on this forum, horse racing consumes my every waking moment. May that never change! I don’t want my stupidity to ever end :)
