VAAL STRAIGHT NOVEMBER 19 FORMGUIDES, SELECTIONS, PERMUTATIONS
David Thiselton
RACE 1: Preview: LIGHTNING LASS (3) has some speed and the ability to stay on and last time she was narrowly ahead of Big City Girl who won net time out beating Golden Eagle narrowly. DESERT PRIDE (9) was green and a touch outpaced over this trip on debut in a workriders’ maiden and then ran on well to be beaten just 0,80 lengths into second so with expected improvement she should go close as long as low draws are not a disadvantage on the day as they can sometimes be here. LOVE OF LONDON (4) stayed on last time over this trip and can also earn a cheque. VERINOVA (6) has been thereabouts in some stronger fields and can earn a cheque. PRINCESS SABRINA (13) made a fair debut over 1000m and should enjoy the extra 200m. (David Thiselton 3-9-4-6-13)
RACE 2: Preview: ROSE WILLOW (15) made a good debut over this trip in a workriders’ maiden and is an obvious form choice. MEET THE CAPTAIN (5) ran on well last tme over 1400m to be beaten 2,30 lengths and she has earned over this trip before. OFFSIDES (14) is a R280,000 Silvano filly out of a Storm Cat mare who cost US$1.1 million as a yearling but she has only produced a couple of one-time winners out here including the R3 million Speightstown colt Ante Omnia who had to be sent to PE to win a race, although the full-brother to Offsides, Ruby Spirit, did finish a close second on debut over 1000m at Scottsville and then won next time out over 1200m at that same course. (David Thiselton 15-5-14)
RACE 3: Preview: PUSH OFF (2) is an Irish-bred half-brother to a seven-time and six-time winner and from the family of the like of Lammtarra stayed on well from a wide draw over this trip last time and has a chance down the straight although a relatively low draw might not be in his favour. FORWARD MARCH (11) is consistent and from a high daw over an ideal trip should be in the shake up. JET CAT (1) is consistently thereabouts and enjoys this trip. DOUBLE DIGIT (12) is by Twice Over and is a half-sister to the fair sprinter Robberg Express. WAY TO DREAM (13) is by Modus Vivendi and is a half-sister to the fair sort Manitoba. CAROLINA REAPER (3) and SUCCESSFUL SECRET (4) both have the ability to earn here but low draws might be against them. (David Thiselton 2-11-1-12-13-3-4).
RACE 4: Preview: SOUL CONNECTION (3) bounced back to his best last time when held up and running on strongly that made his record over this course and distance two wins, two seconds and two thirds in seven runs. GANG LEADER (4) has shown ability and on pedigree should handle the step up in trip. FOREVER LIGHT (6) has proved in his last two starts that he is up to his current merit rating. (David Thiselton 3-4-6)
RACE 5: Preview: ELUSIVE WOMAN (
is in fair form, is competitively weighted and drawn on the standside over a suitable trip. LAETITIA’S ANGEL (2) is an effective pace setter and stays this trip so could do well with a 4kg claimer up from a high draw. MARYGOLD (3), the best weighted runner, makes her seasonal reappearance over a trip on the sharp side but she has the class to prevail although her number one draw is not in her favour. CAVIVAR (5) has class and although she has had issues her comeback run was not bad and she is a contender over a strip she should get although her low draw might not be in her favour. GAIAN GLORY (1) has disappointed in her last two starts but if bouncing back could earn here. (David Thiselton 8-2-3-5-1)
RACE 6: Preview: LAND OF RUBIES (
, under these classified stakes conditions in which females get an allowance, is the best weighted horse and has a 4kg claimer up over a trip she went close over in her penultimate start. FLY NORTH (10) is in fine form and over an ideal trip and is only 1kg under sufferance with best weighted horse if apprentice claims are ignored. PASSION PEACH (13) is drawn on the right side and has a 2,5kg claimer aboard over a trip where she should be staying on well from a high draw. IN THE GAME (7) romped in over 1800m last time and although given a six point raise he could go close again if repeating that effort. SECRETS OF MAYA (1) drops down to his best trip and a 1,5kg claimer alleviates some of his topweight. SUPA MUFTI (15) is drawn on the right side and could earn. GET SET (9) should be thereabouts in this competitive event. GOLD ROCK has a tricky low draw but does have the ability to be a player here. OUT OF THE RAINBOW (3) is better than his last win. (David Thiselton 8-10-13-7-1)
RACE 7: Preview: SPANISH BOY (3) is hard-knocking and drawn on the right side over an ideal trip. WRITTEN IN STONE (
can be relied on to earn and is distance suited and although a low draw in not ideal he is a sort who seems to prefer running freely without cover. HOLY MAN (6) had the draw against him last time and has a win and a second in three starts over this course and distance. SAVIOUR ((14) won a good race last time over 100m when finishing well and looks to be on the up so can overcome a three point raise. CREATION (2) is a capable sort who is a bit in and out but he is drawn on the right side and represents an in-form yard. ODEN (1) can’t be ignored over an ideal trip. (David Thiselton 3-8-6-14-2)
RACE 8: Preview: PERSICA (9) won effortlessly last time and from a high draw over the same trip a three point raise might not be enough to stop her. TWELVE OAKS (10) went close last time for her fifth second place finish over this course and distance and she is drawn on the right side. MAY QUEEN (13) is 1kg worse off for a length beating by Persica over this course and distance. STELLAR MOTION (1) was making late progress in her comeback run over 1000m and from a high draw has a shout over an ideal trip. ROYAL LILY (6) has disappointed in her last two but is capable of being a contender here. (David Thiselton 9-10-13-1-6)
RACE 9: Preview: WINE TASTING (1) has not been disgraced against some good sorts since her easy maiden win over 1000m and has a nice high draw. FLOWER OF SCOTLAND (4) caught the eye in her maiden win over this trip last time and starts her handicapping career off on a reasonable merit rating. OCEANIA (3) disappointed last time but did cast a shoe and can bounce back. SPEECHMAKER (13) has been in good form although a low draw is potentially against her. LA VALETTE (15) could earn here from a high draw. HELLO HAPPINESS (12) made late progress last time against a promising sort and could also be involved with the same rider aboard. (David Thiselton 1-4-3-13-15-12)

Some big fields today - thoughts:
R3: Push Off will have to improve big time to turn around the form with Jet Cat on a line through Master Uletide - inside draw a bit of a worry, but Jet Cat the one for me
R4: Apprentice handicap, big field - not easy, but Soul Connection should be right there; next 3 for me are Shortstop, Irrevocable Dream and Snow in Seattle
R5: Over this distance, anything possible; Elusive Woman could make them run off bottom weight, but Gaian Glory, not out of it imo; Marygold may prove too good, while I'd like Cavivar to behave before following that one
R6: Obviously another nightmare of a race; hopefully Fly North and Supa Mufti could run in the first 3 for PAs; Stormy Winter MR coming down, so chance at the weights; anything possible
R7: Spanish Boy does seem the right one on his last run, but on his penultimate is held by both Holy Man and Silver Master, while HM was easily beaten by Ballon D'Or - so who knows
R8: Closely matched fillies; the stable mates Persica and Twelve Oaks drawn on the stand side, which may give them the edge over The Fifth Wave and Glowtoria; others with chances Royal Lily and Milan's Princess with the inconsistent Princess Nicole
R9: Best bet of the day imo is WIne Taster; should start odds-on imo
Enjoy
