Which Jock will give the CHAMPIONSHIP a FULL go this season ?
16 years 9 months ago
Which of our local jocks will give the championship a FULL go this season ?
ANDREW FORTUNE.....candy man ? his agent tells us he will give it a full go & that he is willing to travel to do this. I say NO he cant achieve this due to his weight restrictions. We all know he has got an abundance of talent & a NEWFOUND DEDICATION, but riding top weights he will find the going TOUGH.
P.STRYDOM - NO, he won't travel further than the Vaal, except to Durbs & Cape Town for 2 weeks of the season.
K.NIESIUS - NO he won't travel outside the cape.
M.KHAN - YES, apparently his Dubai trip is off for this year & if he continues to travel to P.E. he deffinitey has ANOTHER WINNING CHANCE.
A.DELPECH - YES if he stays in S.A. ( Is he not MAURITIUS ) bound some time ? He seems to ride in Durban only....if he is willing to travel to other centres he has a DEFFINITE CHANCE....He still holds the S.A. record for # of wins in a season.
W.MARWING - NO going overseas ( Hong Kong ) I hear.
B.SMITH - NO, had he still been with Tarry, then YES a big chance.
Remember when M.J.ODENDAAL said he was going for the championship about 3-4 seasons back. He put his mind to it, travelled everywhere... & WON THE CHAMPIONSHIP.
His strike rate was not good % wise, but he probably had the most mounts that season & would ride the stable cat if it was nominated.
WHERE ARE OUR UP & COMING YOUNGER JOCKS, WHO COULD GIVE THE CHAMPIONSHIP A GO. They are young enough, fit enough to travel & ride 4 meetings a week ?
How about - GAVIN LERENA ( some might say he is too heavy to get all the good rides ) COUSIN, BRANDON LERENA ?
DONAVIN HABIB ? if he were to ride outside of Joburg & Kimberley. The dedication is there.
anyone else that might make the list ? let's debate.

Greg Cheyne
Rides Greeff horsies and Marcus yard. Seems to have really good attitude. My tip for the title.
Fortune if he rides for the Miller yard in Kimber;ey the whole season could be a threat.
Thats about it.

You wouldnt find a more dedicated Jock than Greg, this guy literally eats, sleeps and drinks racing. Imho is where he is today because of his sheer determination. I agree he might not be the strongest or the styliest jock around but his one of the most hungriest. What about Richard Fourie? Young, talented and has Snaith backing him!

Elvis the SA championship has become a joke in recent years. Two years ago you would have to think for many hours before deciding wether to put ten rand on Greg Cheyne.I still believe he is winning the amount of races he is becz he is riding top horses in ordinary races against mediocre jocks.Go watch a close up on Don Habib ride and tell me if thats who you want to be SA champ(he looks like one of those riders form Ngong and its not a pretty site).Let B lerena break 60 wins in a season before thinking of him becoming champ. There is no incentive to be Sa champ and thats why we dont see our real top jocks competing country wide. The championship is not about who is the best jock anymore but rather about which ordinary jock can ride the most winners at bush meetings. What a joke!!!

Eyesore I agree on B Lerena, imo he is a bad jockey, that wins on good horses. With the right stable and backing Danielson is a future SA Champ. Top joc with a very decent attitude.

The most improved rider - very strong in a finish - Marco Van Rensberg - if you need proof watch his rides for Binda lately

Hello Power, I agree that Derek David SHOULD be the top appy come the end of the season - baring any lengthy suspensions ( he just recently did +/- 3 weeks for putting his hands down in the finish )
Talk after this years Durban July was that RICHARD FOURIE had been offered top position in AUSSIE. Has this fallen through - or was it runours only. I left him out of my calculations cause, I thought he was leaving our shores.

Hi all!
I have just joined and was reading through this discussion about who the next champ jock will be and it made me wonder if anyone could answer me this question: We have great up and coming jocks eg. Corne Orffer who works his butt off every morning and yet trainers would give the horse to an older jock to ride in the race. Is this fair? I think that he is a brilliant jock and would go far if given the rides? Any comment?
