Clearly the jockey championship, unlike most championships, is not all about being outstanding at your job but more about how hard you are prepared to work.

It's astounding how our best jocks in terms of talent and experience "can't" win it because it means you HAVE to regulary leave a major centre and ride yaks in mongolia to rack up meaningless points.

Even more clear is the competition has lost all meaning. You almost have to wonder what other very good jocks think when the winner holds up the trophy... perhaps it's "there has to be an easier way to get voyager miles?" rather than "what a superb rider".

Totally agree, JD; so how do we make it 'meaningful' again? Perhaps by looking at percentage of winning rides?

I believe Greg could do this under the mentorships of one of the Best Jockeys of all time - Basil Marcus. Did no one notice the sudden improvements both Richard Fourie and Greg made once picking up permanent rides for the Marcus yard.

I am of the opinion that if all goes to plan for the yard this season, Greg will definitely be right up there and if the Greef yard also fires then he will be right at the top of the championship list.

I have had the great fortune of meting Greg and he is a humble decent person and a Jockey good enough to put others to sleep in the Gold Cup on a horse that everyone bar a few were overlooking. The July performance imo was just as good and if Gunter and Hunting had not bumped him as much they did Desert Links and Greg may have even won the race.

Keep up the hard work Greg Cheyne

I don't think you will get agreement to change the rules because we may not like the outcome. In many fights for a jockey championship jockeys have had to travel to get wins especially in tight competitions. There have been times when other jocks have given good rides to a challenger. It's just unfortunate that the competition has got to the point where Kim is the decider.

But then it's a national title and the champ is the guy who won the most races so what can we do?

Thanx sylvester for that inspiring comment. i was just wondering if you were a jock that works hard and gets nothing for it, if you would also then eventually become an average jock? But then, we will never know?

Thats great news.At least he will have a jock that will try his heart out to get the best out of the horse. He is the type of jock that tries to win with anything that is given to him. If you look at some of the rides he was given last year, you will see how that horse improved.
look at a jock like Musi Yeni. Rode a Trebble today! If these jocks are given the good rides, we will then see how good they really are.
thanx again.

My knowledge very limited about these things, but I am mates with Raymond Danielson's agent (MD, for those who know him). I would imagine that a good agent can make a HUGE difference to a jock's title hopes. Is this assumption correct?
