I used to play cards with Gerry, Tommy & Pat Ruck & Jane Redrup (Meikle) every Friday night. Very enjoyable. Gerry sadly had a heart attack & died in either 1975 or 1976. I do remember old Vinko. Quite a character he was. That horse NO RESPITE was !& hands or more. A monster! Trainer by Hilda Knapp.

@ Kargisland Someone once told me that No Respite was then the tallest horse in the southern hemisphere. I'm sure Royal Air Force was even shorter than him. Vinko also had that very useful filly Miss Flash :). Do you live in Joburg?

Few jockeys ive benefitted from in the 90's.
R Bonham,R Singh especially with their roughies.

Tad disappointing that most here missed the winning trainer of Met - C SHAW.(Imperious Sue)
Also, the assistant trainer to D Hodgson in KZN.....R Pickering?

Imperious Sue just holds on in J&B Met

IMPERIOUS SUE, one of only two mares in the R750 000 J&B Met run over 2 000 m at Kenilworth yesterday, shocked punters by beating the well-fancied North By Northwest by a shorthead.

Shah's Star (5-2), London News (4-1) and North By Northwest (9-2) dominated pre-race betting, but Imperious Sue (16-1) stole their thunder.

The Northern Guest mare had all in her favour. She had the luxury of the inside draw, a highly competent jockey in the irons and the lightest weight of all the runners and the advantage of being trained by David Payne.

Anthony Delpech jumped Imperious Sue on terms and was able to settle her down on the inside running rail. North By Northwest landed running with Gold Panner and the other mare in the race, Faralmond, racing up with them.

Last year's Met winner, London News was taken up to be handy too, racing just ahead of Imperious Sue and Shah's Star.

At the halfway mark, Gold Panner was in a comfortable 1-1/2-length lead with London News in second place.

Faralmond had the run of the rail with North By Northwest racing too wide round the back turns. Imperious Sue stuck to her position on the rail, galloping freely, while Muis Roberts moved Speedy Dollar up into contention. Shah's Star was five lengths off the pace.

Gold Panner brought the field into the final straight, but was challenged fairly quickly by London News with Faralmond getting into the act as well.

Imperious Sue had an uninterrupted run on the rail and responded well to Delpech's instructions, hitting the front with 200 m left to go.

Meanwhile, Pierre Strydom got to work on North By Northwest and they flew up to head the mare. It looked as though they would sail on in home, but Imperious Sue with her 5,5 kg advantage was able to reel in North By Northwest to get the narrowest of verdicts.

Smart Money, who had loafed near the back of the field for most of the race, unwound a good late run to get up for third place a head in front of the favourite, Shah's Star. They were nearly two lengths behind Imperious Sue and North By Northwest.

London News may have disappointed his followers, but he did finish in fifth place despite carrying top weight of 58 kg.

There were ecstatic scenes after the race when owners Len Salzman, Farrell Ratner and Wayne Aldridge were presented with the

J&B Met trophy. Payne and Delpech were generously praised.
