Wow Blood,I was at a couple of those .....................they stopped cos after a couple of meets,no bookmakers would go back.
Won't go into detail but every race was a done deal............was given every winner the night before in the casino bar.
The 2 bookmakers who were conned into going thru from Jhb to stand, were cleaned out!!
(one of the races had a group SA winner against farm horses.................lol(I think it was Bold Tropic)

Ja Rob we flew in from Durbs the soccer star from Durbs not sure if it was City or United was a great guy and player called Bobby Chalmers who worked for in those days Holiday Inns who organizes the flight and got a whole bunch of us there. Wow what an eye opener a helluva a lot of fun where I can also guarantee every race was sorted the night before. The only losers were the locals and the bookie that was there ( shame ) . One of mrs Hemmings horses ran three times on the day and won twice. Scotia you right even the dogs were fun but didn't last too long

i remember as a lightie watching those okes turn up at the races in bmw m3's with personalised steering wheels.......

those were the days.

going to Xavier every friday after school, taslking to mathew leisher and any other brother/sister that was there. Speaking to Sam, then off to work in rissik street at a bottle store with my racecard marked. Saturdays in to work and after work to loveday street to the tatts. Sneaking in and going all the way to the top floor so as to not get chucked out......

Patricio got warned off. (much better rider than Roberto) Roberto went to Zim and became a thug up there. Think he also suffered he same fate as his brother.

Anyone remember that other foreigner Vega or Vera, that rode for Jean Heming?

@Mac & @ Titch just thought I'd go on to Google & look at some images of Ascot and Bulawayo, in general. Anyone that has every been to that beautiful city will find this enjoyable. I've uploaded a few photos, so enjoy.

Isnt that Barry Lerman in the last pic?

There is next to nothing on the internet for Ascot Byo. No history, no nothing. Some time ago I think Magic posted a pic of the infield information board. So sad. I even lost the pic.

Can anyone remember a non-computerised tote system? We punters from Ascot do. I think 'til 1978 the whole tote was non-computerised but manual. It may have taken a little longer to calculate the dividends, but not much longer, may be 5 mins longer.

@ kargisland - I think ABC has more info on Ascot Byo than the entire internet. I found this posted by Elvisisking who, I think, has not posted in ages. Anyway, Elvis' step dad was a guy called Pieter Stroebel (spelling?). Pieter holds the WORLD record for the biggest sequence of wins,12, in Bulawayo, 1958. I dont think it would have been Ascot then.
