Ummmm?? Jockeys log as of 31 July 2012 (rides only)
A.Marcus - 703
G.Lerena - 1086:
leaving an 11% strike difference between them- True champion crowned finished en klaar.
(Heard Gavin spent the whole season using the woman's jockey room in JHB..... )

Spook i think it goes without saying that the less rides you have the higher your % wins will be especially when 70% of those rides are favorites..that said 11% diff in strike rate bodes well for gavin's ability having ridden 300+ more rides for far smaller trainers/owners..Abraham Makhubo finished with a strike rate of 26% winners should he be considered a better rider than Gav and Anthony?

Avg week
Bahrain- 1 Arab, 6 TB races
Qatar- 5 Arab, 2 TB races
UAE- 8 Arab, 12 TB races
In UAE 9/10 Championships are won by riding Arab races which decide the Overall Championship but there are also awards for TB only, Arabs only + Carnival winners. Very rare to have the same jock win 2 of the 3 and nobody has won all 3!

@ Titch- Gav had some pretty sweet rides through the season, most of them towards the end, I can recall, started favourite.
I am not taking anything away from his riding abillity (top class) but was merely replying in confusion to Andy cap's post ,read above. As far as you stating that its purely Antons connection with a large stable... well if that were the case Delpech would have won it hands and heels or even Fourie under Snaith.
Truth is Gav had the pick of the bunch up in JHB with the help of Gray and Tarry as well as the smaller yards, but apart from De Kock and Tarry there are no big yards in JHB. So everybody up here rides for smaller yards! Even Anton...
as for comparing a workrider with a jock- apples and oranges.
As for the Zim story, as a matter of fact the Zim exclusion has been in the pipeline from when Derrek David won the Apprentice title doing the same... I know Anton did not really want to chase this year, but as Klawervlei was the sponsor, they MADE him contest.
Gavin is a good jockey, Anton is just better.

Gavin Lerena is still young with a big future. He will most probably in my opinion inherit anton marcus stable for when anton marcus calls it a day but to be the best u have to compete against the best.even if u riding less competitive horses its still experience at the end of the day I think

His riding ability is not in question...and we all know that Gavin has plenty of ability...and his time to win the South African chamionship will come....but wasnt to be this past season even with Zim included. We can all go around in circles as to the pro's and con's but the bottom line is this season it will be for SA rides only.

Well lets hope the "2 horse race" will now become a "5 or 6 horse race".....
