Very true...It was the first time in my life that I ever saw a race like that..And the thing that shocked me was that some guys in the tote was actually laughing everytime a horse fell, to them it was a joke.
If I was a jockey, I'd never agree to ride in a race like that. They risk their lives also in the race, and the poor horses get hurt and die. They must protest against having a race like that, it must be made illegal!

Lets all stop eating steak and the women stop buying leather handbags.Hundreds of thousands of animals are killed each year for our enjoyment of food and fashion each year. I think The National has too many runners, but all the changes too the race to appease the do-gooders has made it more dangerous.I dont bet or watch the race and if it turns your stomach i think you should do the same.

well guys the fact of the matter is you would have to ban the whole national hunt sport, hunting, point to points, eventing, showjumping and probably flat racing ...
There has been 40 horses destroyed in the race since 1945 (rip) ,think about all the horses that are euthanized because of training accidents or because they are just not fast enough. The average age of a runner in the National is 9 year old, they live to race...What do you think is a life expectancy of a 60 rated maiden running at the vaal?

I repeat the following only to demonstrate consistency :
ALL HORSE RACING IS EXPLOITATIVE.
If any posters can point out to me how the entire global industry benefits the horse I would be delighted to hear about it. There is NOTHING humane or caring about it. From birth to death they are bred to fulfill our ambitions and dreams so heaven help them when they can't.
Think about it : If we stopped breeding thoroughbred horses altogether for all racing disciplines how exactly would we or the horse be worse off?
ALL HORSE RACING IS EXPLOITATIVE.
With few exceptions they are mostly treated as expendable playthings for the rich and ego driven.

Structural or "macro-level" exploitation: "new liberal" theories focus on exploitation by large sections of society even (or especially) in the context of free markets. Marxist theory points to the entire capitalist class as an exploitative entity, and to capitalism as a system based on exploitation.

Yes, I heard it ... had a good laugh too. Those two are so very different in all their ideas, but still stay friends. Shows you what a common love of the gigis will do ... we should publicise it, "Come into horse racing and ditch all the politicians, world peace is possible".
Just joking! I hope the committee that runs the race can work something out. They are up against a very powerful lobby ... after all, hunting was just as much part of the English tradition as the National, and where is it today?

All sports (incl. horse racing) involve some element of danger.
These jumpers "love to jump obstacles"- note their ears pricked while jumping/running, also these horses are not pushed into it.
Grand National make great spectacle only the they need to improve safety by
1) THEY SHOULD REMOVE THE 'DROP FENCES' ( LEVEL OUT ground before and after the fence ).
2) REDUCE THE SIZE OF FIELD ( IMO to 24 ).
3) DEPLOY MORE STAFF TO CATCH/HOLD AND REMOVE THE "UNSEATED" HORSES (during race). Loose running horses pose danger to others and are prone to "INJURY" ( e.g. Synchronised broke leg while running loose after falling ).
4) Aintree is "FAST TRACK" and horses tend to go "FASTER" (than really required) on the first circuit which causes accidents/falls/UR. In the heat of the moment, this is forgotten by jocks and everyone wants to race prominently ( thereby further increasing the early pace).
*** WE ALL HAVE AN ANIMAL INSIDE US ( which will keep the NATIONAL going ).

Eventually all sports using animals will be forbidden. Just like the western hemisphere circuses today which no longer uses animals.......
