2012 Grand National

The death of the Gold Cup winner is beeing heralded in UK as the biggest threat to the race since the near sale of Aintree in the 1970's. More and more people are now calling for the race to be abandoned.

Have to admit yesterday was a bit of a bloodbath

The Grand National must NEVER be run again .Sad to see great horses being send to slaughter.

Were they campaigning before the race?

yes since the Wedn in London central prior to the race on Sat there have been articles in the tabloids, mostly negative

Thanks Don... I have mixed feeling about this race, rather not comment...

Yesterday on our national racing station named TVG, the American commentator was joined by a guy with an Irish accent that apparently is a jump rider of some sort that is now exercising horses.

He went on and on about how horses falling in the Grand National was merely part and parcel of the sport and that the horses loved it, as evidenced by their continuing to leap fences even after falling and unseating their riders.

He also tried to assure watchers that he carefully watched the fallers and the horses all appeared to be okay.

When I read this morning that 3 of the horses died, my immediate thought is as follows: with horse racing under the gun in America, a spectacle like this shown on American TV will do nothing but encourage shouts for banning the sport due to cruelty.

Whoever that muppet is that TVG dug up, I hope he goes whence from where he came......AND DON'T COME BACK!!!

I had such a shock when I saw this race...It was terrible to see so many fall..It's very dangerous and I hope they will never have a race like that again..

Yep its a disgrace..what kind of people like watching horses race where they already know some poor horses are going to die? I have not watched in years and all I do now is wait till its over..go onto the site and see how many were put down. Now I wonder if it were the other way around..where we knew that 2 or 3 jockeys would definitely be put down during the race...how would that go down with the watching public.

This race gives the sport a bad bad image!

I watched racing all afternoon and when the Grand National was due.... switched channels. One must be a masochist to watch that race .
