Did anybody hear Goodmans suggestion of the ratings following the Derby,on Winning Ways(repeat @ +- 9:15pm)
Did anybody else take any notice?
I couldn't believe what I was hearing, part of his suggestion is that Variety club be reduced to 110???
Varity Club ran out of stamina.........not ability!

what does james goodman know about ratings except what he sucks out of his thumb? how can it be reduced to 110 when he beat bravura(113) and tales of bravery(113) in the queens plate at wfa terms? ridiculous..it never ceases to amaze me that people that have no idea about certain topics are still allowed to voice their opinions on a platform like tv!!

At worst, I make Variety Club a 116. He may have just found 2000m too far in the Derby, although he still beat the third horse by a street. Gimmethegreenlight more or less franked his form with Variety Club in the Met, when probably failing to stay 2000m to a greater extent than Variety Club in the Derby. I would make Jackson no less than a 118, and can easily justify making him 120. That would make him the best 3yo in the country, and the results of both races on Saturday suggest he deserves it.

Let's not forget that these are gross MRs, before the WFA is removed, so in nett terms that does not make Jackson better than Igugu (just in case the Igugu fan club starts baying for blood...>:D

His parents should have named him Jack not James.

are MR's affected by a horses optimal distance?

If Val de Ra was to run in the Canon Gold Cup would she go into the race with the same MR as she did in the Flying Champs?

Yes she would. Their MR is based on the horses optimum distance.

You can have different MRs for different surfaces, but the system would implode if you tried to implement different MRs for different distances. Then you'd have to look at different MRs for different courses (e.g. Bay Route at Greyville or Selborne Supremacy on the Turffontein inner track etc etc).

The MR has to be based on optimum distance and so on. The trick as a form student is to try and work out how likely a horse is to run to/below/above its MR on any given day. There's a reason why Americans call form studfents "handicappers."

Let's take a horse like Bulsara for example...

If you look at his form record which isnt great and he has a MR of over a 100

It just doesnt seem to add up...

The only conclusion I can draw is that because he is owned by Oppenheimer, the people responsible for handing out the MR's are more lenient so that he can run in the July and other big races so that the owner will be happy that their colours are represented in the major races and continue to pump money into the sport

Is this silly or possible?
