Problem is we have to win by a few goals and rely on the other game

Why is it that our soccer team is so poor when compared to the rest of the world - our rugby team is tops (admittedly a much smaller 'pool'), our golfers hold their won, our horses, trainers and jockeys are of international class, etc.

THE MAJOrity of our players that are in the team play in our local league which is very weak and unlike rugby where you have the super 14 to bridge the gap between currie cup and test level the jump is way to big for most of the local players..also a foreign coach is not the right way to go for me as a local coach like a gavin hunt would do far better as he would know the culture of the team along with an in depth knowledge of all the players..at the end of the day our players we are producing bar 1 or 2 are also not up to standards even as far as the basics are concerned

I AM VERY PROUD THAT WE ARE HOSTING THE W.C.
I AM THRILLED THE WAY EVERYONE IS EMBRACING THE W.C. FEVER AND THE BEHAVIOR FROM EVERYONE HAS BEEN BRILLIANT,EVERYWHERE.
I AM DISAPPOINTED WITH OUR OWN PERFOMANCES,BUT WE MUST BE REALISTIC,WE WOULD NEVER HAD QUALIFED,IF WE WERE ASKED TO.
VERY BELOW AVERAGE ,HIGHLY PAID BIG HEADS.
OUR LOCAL PRO LEAGUES ARE PATHETIC.
BUT GUYZ WE MUST BE PROUD OF THE WAY WE AS A COUNTRY, PUTTING ON A SUCCESSFULL WORLD CUP UP TO NOW.
LONG MAY IT CONTINUE BRINGING THE NATION TOGETHER

Being proud of hosting the world cup, etc and having a team that is competitive in it are two totally different subjects - I think pirates has a point about the local league, so the next question then is why are the administrators not able to put together a regular (every 2 years?) tournament (ala the European Cup) against southern hemisphere teams like the Aussies, New Zealand, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraquay , etc.
My personal opinion about the coach is that he is past his sell-by date - I think I read somewhere that he was so useless in South America in recent years that nobody wanted him- yet SA is willing to pay him millions (and even take him back after he abandoned us - and suggested a brilliant replacement). But give him is due, we really did not look THAT bad against Mexico, so why could we not repeat the performance against Uruguay?) Not sure about my facts, but I also believe that we have had 14 different coaches in the last 15 years - no wonder we can't get anywhere - and surely Pereirra is going to take his money and run after the world cup - so we will be looking for yet another coach. Let's hope we can get the next one (and I agree it should be a local guy) to stick around for the next 5 years at least, so that come 2018 we may have a team able to qualify and perform up to scratch.
