Repeating Names
15 years 2 weeks ago
Now I'm sure the NHA rules for naming a horse state that a name can be re-used after 20 years, which I can understand... Maybe I'm wrong?
But I saw a Windrush filly called Chinook won at the Vaal today. She was born in 2007. Now a couple of years back, I worked with a Mistral Dancer gelding called Chinook, who was born in 1993... I have verified their dates of birth.
Can anyone explain this? We are going to have a modern Stud Book full of doubled up names...

Imagine the uproar if there was a new Pocket power in 15 years time?

I think a name can officially be re-used every 18 years within one country.
If they are bred in different countries, should they ever campaign against each other, they will be differentiated by the country of birth displayed in brackets after the name.

Perhaps it would be right to have some form of "Hall of Fame" whereby horses names like SEA COTTAGE,HORSE CHESTNUT,POCKET POWER etc could be listed therein and then those name protected for all time.
I think everybody(old timers) would be horrified if there was suddenly a horse named William Penn for instance that ended up a 5 yr old maiden in Kimberly.

There was also a Chinook in the early/mid 1970s who I think even ran in the July before he finished his career in what is now Zimbabwe, where he might even have run in some amateur hurdles races.
Now you know you're getting old when the same name comes around a third time. I have also known three horses named D Day (with or without a hyphen) and Fan Mail. Eish!

There will of course be LOADS of names repeated internationally - I mean there simply aren't enough words in the english language to go around. BUT, for it to be repeated within 20 years, in the SOUTH AFRICAN stud book, is simply silly. There will be repeats within second dams on pedigree pages - so then you will really have to scratch your head as to which horse they are referring too. I think that this is a slip up on the Stud Book Department's part...

We have a 2yr old winning filly that we bred called Outofthisworld and at The National Sale this year a filly was sold called Out of this World also SA bred. Also noticed SECRETARY GENERAL and know that Paddy Kruyer had a graded winner called that within the last 15/18 years. Some names ie Sea Cottage are protected and cannot be used but would probably get past The Stud Book as most of them dont follow racing anyway.

Below are the rules with regards to naming.
I haven't found the rule that states how long the period between repeat usage.
CHINOOK was registered 3 years ago, 14 and 33 years ago (gap between): (2007,1993,1966).
35. NAMES OF HORSES
35.1 All names shall be subject to the approval of the CHIEF EXECUTIVE who
shall not approve the REGISTRATION of the following names:
35.1.1 those consisting of more than 18 characters, including punctuation marks
and/or spaces, save that 18 characters may be exceeded when a country
code suffix is required;
35.1.2 those of well-known people, save where written permission is obtained from
the individual or the descendants of the individual concerned, by the PERSON
seeking to REGISTER the name;
35.1.3 those on the International or National List of Protected Names;
35.1.4 those containing numbers or initials or a combination of numbers and initials;
35.1.5 those of a similar spelling or pronunciation to those already REGISTERED;
35.1.6 those in bad taste or which have an unacceptable connotation in another
language;
35.1.7 prominent company, product or trade names, except with the written approval
of the company or body associated with the name.
35.2 A REGISTERED name shall not be changed except with permission of the
CHIEF EXECUTIVE and then only on payment of the prescribed fee. The
CHIEF EXECUTIVE shall not approve any change in the name of an IMPORTED
HORSE unless such change of name has been approved by the racing authority
of the country of foaling.
35.3 The CHIEF EXECUTIVE may order a REGISTERED name to be changed.
(Amended 22/08/2006)

Re: Re: Repeating Names

Jack Dash, I also have an NHA issued book of names, which is specifically issued to show what names are not available. In the front of that book are further rules for naming horses. I have emailed the Stud Book Dept to find out what the rules are. Can you imagine anoth Tommy Hotspur (born in 1991) or London News (born in 1992)? Both their names will be up for grabs in the next two years
