There is a type of Hall of Fame, listing names that may not be repeated. I do not know where to find this list, and I also do not know what credentials are used to get a name onto this list

The Jockey Club and operators were forming a committee in order to set criteria for horse names that could never be used again eg.any horse that has won a group 1 or any multiple group winner but i dont know what has happened as this was to have been implemented about three years ago but as far as i know has not been. I think it is quite sad to see the name of an ex champion been used on a maiden that cant get out of its own way One that springs to mind is a horse called Destroyer that was trained by Bobby Sievewright that was a champion years ago and then Ronald Phillips had a horse called Destroyer that was mediocre so when you mention the name Destroyer most of the current crop of racegoers think of the mediocre horse, and there are many other examples .Champions names should never be repeated , but then i dont know if i am the right person to comment on horse names when i see how many people we have upset with our naming of horses.

I think that names of horses that are unraced should be allowed into circulation immediately. But the name of any horse that has achieved black type, should be put onto a list of "reserved names", which cannot be used again, ever...

Right - this has been bugging me so I contacted the Stud Book Department directly. This is what the rules are:

A name can be used again, but with the following restrictions:

A name of a colt (stallion) or mare can only be used again 20 years after that horse has died, even if it has black type.

A name of a GELDING can be recycled after 10 years, even if that horse is black type.

Horses not registered with the South African Stud book are not governed by these rules, but must follow the rules of the Stud Book from the country in which they were born.

Chinook (1993) was a chestnut gelding by Mistral Dancer, which is why his name has been recycled.

I am glad to have this cleared up once and for all.

Sorry, but I can't help.......not up on this issue,as shown by my previous suggestion. What I suggested is already in place !!!!!

Personally I dont really care as long as they don't re-use the names of champions.
