Magic £1million bet on Red Merlin spells trouble for Ladbrokes
An ante-post punter stands to collect a record-breaking £1million payout from Ladbrokes if the well-fancied Red Merlin delivers in the Ebor Handicap at York in a fortnight.
The mystery punter's £250 treble, invested via his telephone account last month, kicked off with 25-1 shot Laa Rayb's victory in last Friday's totesport Mile at Goodwood and soared the next day at the same venue when Genki (12-1) took the Stewards' Cup.
He has £84,500 riding on Red Merlin at 12-1 in the York handicap on August 19 and will earn Ladbrokes' maximum £1 million dividend should be succeed.
The Clive Cox (pictured) contender is the 7-1 second favourite with Ladbrokes and their spokesman David Williams said: 'Both we and the punter are set for a fortnight of sleepless nights.
'He's on the brink of a life-changing win and we're staring down the barrel of a record-breaking payout.
'It's a recession-busting type of a bet and if Red Merlin hits the front in the final furlong at York we'll be in a whole world of trouble.'

scotia you now i have to say it ,is easy for me to say let them run when it arent my money. what i will say is that this is once in a lifetime bet and if i am honest i will also lay off some of the bet if i was in the same situation

I was once in that position. Had an atc to win R575,000 and I only laid off R25,000 as I was greedy. I thought the last horse in the 4 timer was the srtongest of the lot. Got beat into second by a horse trained by Brett Warren. Good for Brett, not so good for me.

Offer them at least half, let them come back and tell you what they are willing to take. If they are really in trouble they will take 6/1!!!!!!!!!!

I dont think Ladbrokes take back on trebles?..maybe Im wrong?
