Hi clanners is there a specific formula when taking place bets with a bookie to work out the odds on a place bet. Took a win and place bet on Sovereign Reign, (thanks MR H) and was given 6.3/1 for the win and .82/1 for a place with a bookie...the place bet odds seemed very low...or maybe not...appreciate your thoughts.

If there are 14 or more horses in the race then it will pay for the 1st 4 places.....that's why your odds were lower than expected

That's a good question the bookies are inconsistent and they don't seem to be a fixed formula. Tomorrow Greyville Race 1 the place odds are one tenth of the fixed odds for a place and the field consist of 14 runners or more.

BEQUIA strong place bet - could win
IRISH MARSH
LE HARVE e/w
WOLF KILLER e/w
MISS MILANNA best e/w
BIG KING - just watched him trial... acceptable and time similar to his last win - last won 2016 carrying 63.5kg with Marcus up over this c/d in a MR 80- carries 58.5kg today - comes in as a 77 due to long rest - don't leave him out

Is the favourite odds on in that race ? It not, likely 4 places but actual number of runners is less than 14 due to scratchings...
