Sun Met latest
8 years 5 months ago
Legal Eagle will go into the R5-million Sun Met on Saturday 28 January as the best handicapped runner.
Sean Tarry’s charge has been allotted joint top weight of 60kg along with Mac De Lago, dual Summer Cup winner Master Sabina and Durban July champion The Conglomerate. However, with a merit rating of 123 Legal Eagle will have a handicap advantage of 4.5kg over Mac De Lago, 6.5kg over Master Sabina and 8kg over The Conglomerate when they line up for this Grade 1 race over 2000m at Kenilworth.
Captain America is the next best handicapped contender. With 58kg to carry is just 1.5kg out of kilter with Legal Eagle. Second favourite Marinaresco carries 59.5kg along with It’s My Turn.
Trainer Justin Snaith has ended any speculation as to whether four-year-old filly Bela-Bela will run in the Sun Met or the Klawervlei Majorca Stakes over 1600m by accepting her to run in the R5-million race. He has also accepted It’s My Turn and Baritone.
Bela-Bela has been allotted 57kg and that will see her giving an additional 4kg to Legal Eagle on handicap terms.
There were five scratchings on Monday – Abashiri, Black Arthur, Parachute Man, New Predator and Captain’s Flame.
Final declarations must be in by 11am on Monday 16 January fter which the final field will be announced. Draws for barrier positions will take place on Thursday 19 January 2017

I know its only semantics but Legal Eagle, Captain America and maybe a few others are not the best handicapped runners but the best weighted runners.

Biggest stakes in SA history and MDK would probably just squeeze in a runner at the bottom of the Log due to the scratchings, just not something that would have happened a couple of seasons ago
I know he is chasing the biggest stakes on the International front but still........

Thanks for confirming that stat Bob, hopefully he get's a run with the 3YO Heavenly Blue.
We need a MDK runner in the race, he won with a couple of nice 3YO horses before so will make it extremely interesting......and exciting

Just looking at the entries again .... seems pretty strange that Sail South was never entered - won over 1600, very good run in the QP - what's to lose ?

R37600 supplementary entry fee plus R45600 = R83200.
Unlikely to stay 2000m

Legal Eagle is the best horse in the country. The conditions of the race make him the horse to beat. He settles so well and can be ridden from almost anywhere. If he cracks a good draw he will have everything in his favour. After last Saturday's win I am amazed there is still 16/10 available on him. Whiskey Baron seems to be the unknown and has come on since gelding and I make him the biggest danger.

All i can think of is Smart Call going past Legal Eagle so easily over the Kenilworth 2000m. I believe something similar will happen again but im not sure who will be flying past.......

Interesting comment by Jonno Snaith last Sat on USO. He said that it was worth taking a double on Its My Turn in the 4th onto the Met.Ran 3rd. Has been nominated and no problem with 2000m.
