Anybody recalls this guy, loved his commentary, his voice/tone added immense excitement to a race.
When exactly did Afrikaans commentary stop?
Anyone has one his calls, I particularly remember him calling a big race that Wolf power won.

Have to differ but I hated his commentaries. Can remember the " twee honderd metres van die wenpaal " bit and it all became seriously urgent after that.
His voice was very monotone and I think Bumpy Schoeman would have beaten him odds-on in an Afrikaans commentating contest.

He used to write for the Sunday Times when it had a racing section and I will never forget they day Breathless won its maiden, Georgie and myself took a bus full to the big T all dressed in our colours
Buy the paper on Sunday after the big party and the headline was "A Scot gets lucky" with a full covering story how we bought the horse etc
Magic

No, strangely enough the SABC used Hennie Pieterse many years ago as Afrikaans on course presenter and commentator but he was disastrous frequently calling wrong horses ,colours mixed up etc in feature races covered by SABC TV.

Francois also wrote "horse d'hoeuvres" for the Business Day, invented some horseracing board game, and his brother was "Chuck us a can Charlie".

I remember Francois for his 2 classics :
1: And as they get to the line a horse has won it...........
2: I really don't care who won it as my jackpot is out already.......(that's because he couldn't work out the winner.. ).

Hennie Pieterse once called a July sure it was when Spanish Galliard won as "en die wenner is die wenner"
