Here is how I saw the race, my betting was as follows so that it couldn't be said I am speaking from my pocket!
I backed Legislate as I felt that fresh he would outrun Futura over the mile and that Futura was being prepped for the Met.
Having said that I watched Futura very carefully as he is my favorite horse in SAf right now.
He jumped and was bustled a lot handier than what he is used to and as soon as that happened he became keen and was not settling. This in itself is not ideal. He moved up in the straight but had nothing to come off a pretty easy gallop. The time was relatively slow so if you had not been quite handy you had no shot. Futura doesn't race handy or up with the pace so I think he can be forgiven this effort. He was too handy and had nothing to come.
I also feel that he wasn't 100% for this race as I thought that Legislate was always going to be the choice and the early betting surely indicated that.
Can Futura beat LE at levels in the Met (I assume they will both carry 60?).
It will be tough for him to do so but I feel like LE ran the race of his life here over a distance short of his best, I like to believe in the "bounce factor" in that if a horse runs a career race, he may be a little flat the next start.
All in all I believe that LE will not be favorite for the Met and that Futura should be second choice. The betting will be so skewed in LE's favor that the only betting option for me will be Futura to repeat last years victory!
We wait and see!
