this is our last comment on this topic that caused so much hurt...

However it begs saying that if Kalamains 5th in the Grd3 Derby is what won him the award how come Oriental Tigers 2nd in a Grd2 (out of province too) didn't win him the Champion 2yr old over a mere"listed" winner ?

Hopefully this amount of comment will get the "criteria" looked at and adjusted so that there won't be the same happening next year.

Hi guys Jason did get back in touch not sure what he sent was for posting or just explaining to me..

But anyway he basically said that he can`t speak for the other Judges but he thinks it`s very difficult to make awards to horses that have not won features and the criteria of all awards ( all regions ) should be looked at.

Please tell Jason Dedekind if he is unable to judge horses according to simple criteria set out maybe he should have stepped down as a judge mate

Fair comment!!!! sounds like a few judges could be uncomfortable but the monopolistic nature of the industry makes it very difficult for people to buck the system!
What everybody seems to agree on is that the criteria needs review, and surely the Ability/MR earned, over the period,is least subjective, least controversial and best represents the ability.Theoretically good runs in listed /graded / group races will reflect in those ratings naturally?
(The only addition would be to ensure that the rating is "real" and not artificially capped by the rules, and, in respect of 2 yr olds, it would be necessary to use the "unpublished " ratings that are in fact measured by the handicappers)
Subjectivity causes controversy and needs to be kept to the very minimum in the industry.

At the ratings Futura "won" the July so should that count for the respective award even if he didnt win the race? For me the awards is about winning races and winning classy races.
The award goes to who won the most Gr1's, failing that Gr2's, failing that Gr3's, and so on, but not who came 5th in a Gr3. I understand PE could be a little difficult because of the lack of graded and listed races but its a disgrace to flout the rules.

Mac, the answer to your question is probably YES ........the horse that won the July, only by virtue of receiving weight, was never considered a contender for horse of the year!
Should we be concerned that the present award system allowed a horse rated 7 lbs superior to anything else in the country and rated internationally in the top 20, to be denied the title of Horse of the Year by a local committee who decided it wasn't "classy" enough!

........this thread suggests that subjective panel judging is probably not the way to go and just an observation ................if there was a clear criteria ,without discretion, why were 5 judges needed? ...............it should have only needed a calculator!
