He is a a 7 time winner (6 in the Eastern Cape) but is plagued with problems, never managed to beat Red Barrel who is 3 for 3...
Give everything but up!

Sorry Oscar but I think Kalamain should win uncontested. You did beat him in the Derby Plate but that race was over 2000m in very heavy going and you were beaten by a horse 23 pounds out at the weights.
In the Sophmore Plate Kalamain got beaten a length by Charles Lytton at level weights.
In the Ibhayi Stakes you received 4kg from Charles Lytton to be beaten a neck.
Kalamain won 5 times including the Guineas Plate. You won a maiden and a novice.
Kalamain is a MR92 and you are a MR86. You finished the season with two nothing runs and Kalamain won 2 and finished 2nd to Gogethesherriff in the Friendly City Stakes.
I know which one I would like to own and to think you should receive the award is is an extremely biased viewpoint. Suggesting that the panel is against you when you lose (and you have to lose) is really poor sportsmanship.

Harris, Kalamain is a horse that anyone would love to own. To look at his form is fantastic.....however the criteria clearly state that listed and graded form should take precedence over anything else. In 2010 our horse Torcida Split was the top earning 3 yr old in PE and was not even nominated for the award. When we asked why we were told that criteria is what they follow...
It's not bad sportsmanship just following "rules" that work one year and not another.

JUDGING PROCEDURE
A nomination form will be sent to each judge calling for nominations in the various categories. Once the nomination forms have been received, the convenor of the panel (Mr R SMITH) will contact the panel and get the ball rolling. In each round the candidate with the least nominations will drop out, until the winner is decided. In the case of a split decision, the convenor will have the casting vote. At the end of the selection process, the judges, by way of signature of acceptance, will confirm the final decision.
Please be reminded that Feature, Group, Listed and Graded race form, must take precedence as the emphasis is on class. Horses not domiciled in the Eastern Cape do not qualify for selection.
The Champion jockey award will be presented to the jockey with the most number of local wins. The Champion trainer award will be presented to the trainer with the most number of local wins. The Champion owner will be presented to the owner with the most number of local wins.
A special award can be presented to a horse based in the Eastern Cape that has won a major feature race, out of the Eastern Cape, such as the Met or the July.
Panel of Judges
1) Mr M Jones – AWAY – Family Responsibility
2) Dr A Parker –
3) Mr R Smith (CONVENOR) –
4) Mr J Dedekind –
5) Mr H Steenkamp –

I can sort of understand awards to maybe the best trainer or jockey or apprentice etc but why is it so important to have the horse awards as surely when you win a race that's the ultimate reward and then leading the horse into the winners enclosure?are our egos so important to us ?

I have explained my logic above. You beat Kalamain the day you were beaten by Savethelastdance off a MR of 63. If you are going on that race then Savethelastdance should be champion 3 year old !
That was a Derby Plate. Kalamain won a Guineas Plate. You won nothing.
PS. I would love to own Notting Hill.
