Breeding of racehorses in SA needs to be reviewed, retired horses need to be watched or this will become a country of sad sad racing stories across the world.

boys i think of these story for the long time now i think i have the solution. the race horse every one get the micro chip these days these information is give to nhra so when the poor horse is found the identity is clear. is the first step. to me and i talk from my day as owner is to easy to get rid of horse after race is over. trainer phone and say the horse is finish there is a woman who want him for two grand i take off your account the story you think is over. as we see many time the night mare is now begin for poor horse.

so harry propose these the nhra must have register of who own horse after race. when horse finish race owner has basic 2 choice, he euthanise horse or horse move on. if horse move on to me he have 2 choice. go to horse care or go else where. if he go to horse care unit they send nhra details of horse and is registered like that owner responsibility is over. problem come when horse go else where. if it is for breading then breader inform nhra and owner responsibility is over. if horse do any thing else then the "change of ownership" form must go with horse like you do with car. these change of ownership is the legal document that say the requirements of horse for feed, vet care, stabling, and every thing else. is probably similar to form horse care unit give to rehomed horse new owner when they go to them. so the nhra have the database of horse who is last owner of every horse. if problem come and horse is find in bad conditions then last owner is on database.

the nhra do this for breading why no for all horse after race? off course these cost the money so the fee must be pay for the change of ownership to pay for these expense. this can be possible and to me make racing the better place. only people for me who will no like these is the people who make money from selling horse on to the butchers or the bastard them selves.

I say that if you don't have the R500 or so to change ownership to buy an after race horse you should not own such an animal. I think too many people underestimate the costs of owning a horse for leisure - Hell my vet bills for my two dogs that had serious illnesses were over 20 k in a year and I remember the vet bills I received for horses only too well!! Perhaps if the NHRA charged a set amount as you suggest Flash then 80% of that money could go to the Horse Care Unit

The best idea I have ever heard for this problem Flash.i am sure we as trainers would get the non racing owner to sign the form and pay a fee which we would then lodge with the NHRA.

The problem starts with issuing of racing colors to anyone who thinks they want to own a race horse. This may lead to more owners but also leads to more owners who cant afford horses up keep and when requiring expensive medical treatments the same will apply.
When this happens what is the trainer to do?
Pay the vet bills him/herself?
Allow the horse to suffer?
Approach the RA rep for Assistance?
Beg the VET to work for free?

i think NHRA should review its requisites for ownership as in years gone by.

The same goes by having to many small trainers. Their passion for all thing equine although great, does not pay bills and can lead to horses being neglected.

pirates i was gonna add that may not apply in this case but agree he is not a small trainer and could have afforded to take better care of a horse that has run 110 races

Some see a living being. a personality. A beautiful loving creature.

Others see just an object.

I see the beautiful creature who did not ask for life. Who was bred on purpose. That animal deserves all the love and care it got while it was racing. He cant speak for himself.

Breeders, owners, trainers and jockeys should not love racing, they must love the horses. if they dont, they should really just leave the industry. Its the love for horses that makes it special.
How can one have a horse for years and not care what happens with it?

Rumours of a "big" trainer in that region paid his olds with minutes to spare a month or so ago
