NZ have a population of 4.4 million and far and away the best rugby team in the world, also their rugby 7's are pretty sharp. Aus have a population of 22 million and despite several retirements have still got a very good cricket team and are working their way back to the top in all forms of the game, imho.

SA have a population of 50 million (estimated) and don't excel in anything ... even crime and scams are done better by the Nigerians. It's not a matter of population. Not all the population are "visible". There might be 100's of potentially superb footballers, cricketers, gymnasts, businessmen ... out there in the bush and the townships ... but who knows? They are under the radar.

Well we are not too bad at rugby are we - 2 World Cups - or cricket or golf or swimming for that matter - so to say that we don't excel in anything is a bit harsh imo

With half the population to SA, Aus has double the economy. Aus are four times better off than we are.
