A professional athlete gets a 2 year ban for a first offense and a life ban for a second. After 3 offences surely he should be shown the door. No wonder people say the game is rigged. :X

These guys pay the fine with a smile............it wasn"t me.....i was not there...........You break the rules as a jockey and you go on a forced holiday most of the time.Trainers on the other hand are given a long rope.....

She drifted from 8/1 to 12/1, I think it's safe to say there was no money on! That tabgold link posted earlier in this thread is for another race entirely and has nothing to do with the race in question on the 22nd June 2011.
I was present for a discussion that took place at the stables a short while back regarding what transpired.. Gavin called in the vet to examine Riley’s Star and he (the vet) treated her with ‘Methylprednisilone’.. I think it was for a swollen joint if memory serves me correctly, and this treatment was entered into the Vet book on record, all standard stuff.
Now I’m no expert but as I understand it, Prednisilone is an immunosuppressant, NOT a performance enhancer by any means. Although it is above board and legal as a treatment, horses are not allowed to race with it still in their system, so a ‘clearance period’ is prescribed by Vets to allow for the Prednisilone to pass through. This period was observed accordingly and an extra margin was added on to be safe before racing her, yet despite following protocol, trace amounts apparently still remained in her system on race day.
One possible scenario put forward to explain the extended clearance period was that the Prednisilone may have unintentionally and unknowingly been injected/partially injected into a fat pocket, where it could’ve been stored and released into the bloodstream at a later stage.
I have since heard that the vet did appear on record at the hearing to explain his actions and take responsibility for the treatment and prescribed clearance period but Gavin still got the fine as the trainer responsible for the horse. Clearly this has nothing to do with performance enhancement/doping, or punting, as many posters here appear to have readily concluded. Simply put, Methylprednisilone is not the stuff betting coups are made of, not by a long shot.

Is there any way, within reasonable means, that the horses can be tested for the substances before they race by the trainers? I mean a R110k fine is a huge amount and I would certainly do as much as I possibly can to make sure I don't incur a penalty???
Also it is quite strange that there are trainers out there who NEVER get pulled up over banned substances.
What are they doing that the others who get fined aren't??

Dear Leon
What part of this sentence (pardon the pun) are you actually struggling with?
"Van Zyl pleaded guilty to and was found guilty of the charge."

Gavin comes across as a genuine honest man,but 3x caught, very worrying indeed,i remember when he was a jock he commented in a interview that he is not"one of the boys" in the change rooms and sticks to his principles
