CT-Jockey International: 80% races fail to attract full fields
13 years 7 months ago
Next Sunday, Nov 13th, is the Cape Town leg of the Jockeys Int. with 6 riders in each team.
Of the 5 races, only one managed to get the required 12 runners, the other four legs scratched down to 8 runners/race.
Subsequently, Gold Circle is offering trainers a R1,000.00 per runner and re-opened the race.
To me, this is wrong on so many levels...
-the horses belong to the people who own them, the bribe is going to the wrong place!
-if the trainer scratched the horse, there must be a reason why it's standing in the box and not running, how can R1,000 change this important decision? They saw the fields cut up, they knew it's the Internationals, and already had the chance to re-instate if their scratching really was a 50-50 thing.
-should an owner wonder why his horse gets a run only after the 1K offer?
If my horse was scratched and reinstated for 1k to the trainer, I would personally scratch on principle. It may sound nuts, but think about whats happening here: Didn't I want to have any one (of these top 12) jockeys riding my horse IF AT ALL POSSIBLE in the bloody first place??

They can't fill the fields in the Cape we have just had a win with Danger Point nominated him for a 2450 race on Friday night. They only have 14 runners and he is first reserve. Surely over 2450 on the Standside track you can have more than 14 runners in the race. He will be under sufference but there is no race until mid January that he won't be under sufferance. I went to the stables on Sunday and he looks fantastic at the moment. If he doesn't race on Friday the next race for him will be a MR82 on 10 December.
We pay a fortune to keep the horses in training and when ready to run cannot get a race. We are starting to look at Scottsville just to get a race. (td)

Maybe the jocks are butchering the horses in the internationals , not worth it for a owner to race his property
