kieth steinberg and others including myself
13 years 9 months ago
my head tells me no but my heart tells me yes
firstly what i am going to say is my democratic right and not in any way meant to harm anybody in particular or the racing industry in any way.
my first meeting with andrew bon was a number of years ago when he and neil andrews was down in cape town to do a insert on a horse called dianas choice who gave me lots of joy [ money ] my next few encounters with andrew were pleasent and very enlighting [ what a absolute gentleman ] on one of those encounters i mentioned
that after a few years in the game i have come to realise how dirty a certain part of the industry is and that it left a very sour taste in my mouth his responce was immediate and without a stutter if you dont like it get out of the game nobodys forced you into it as the very likeable and very wise john macdonald would say 100% correct he was in his responce to my true statement.[ all indutries as we know have a dirty side to it including goverments and churches around the globe ]
i now a few years down the line still in the game for the pleasure and thrill it gives me to watch the horse race.
let get back to keith steinberg and others including myself.
in principle i agree with keith steinberg and others that the least one deserves taking into acoount that we firstly pay hard earned cash for the horses at point of sale and there after vet bills and the trainers keep who we as owners employ to do a job with the product in this the horse which we provide like any employer one would expect the employee to be honest and sincere to his or her employer whilst in his or her employ. strange but true in this industry it works the other way round. you hear and read about it all the time [ there are cases where owners where not happy with there employee [ trainers ] and taken there product [horse] and moved on to another employee [trainer ] but in most cases this does not happen and for this reason you have to ask yourself why in hells name would we not only keep doing this but allow it to happen.
the answer is quite simple embarressment . fact is most owners buy into yearlings which as we know it takes some time before your product [ horse ] can start racing and earn you money as well as punt. but in the stable there are other horses that you can punt based on information mostly from the trainer [ the person in your employ ] and at the start of any relationship in this case the game as we call it we do not want to know anything bad [ same like when you form new friendships especially with the opposite sex ] most owners are in this game to make money which is the obvious but as time will tell most there is no easy money out there and here in lies the biggest problem.
i have on this forum some time ago and in public made it known that i and i alone am responsible for falling into the trap of easy money and not blame anybody else as in some cases allow ones self to get handled by some jockeys or trainers in some cases when it involves easy money. for that stupidity you have only yourself to blame but this happens not to be the case in most instantses because we talk from the pocket and shoot from the hip we blame others. [ some jockeys and in some cases trainers] how wrong we are. we were not forced at gunpoint.
it is so easy as we know to hide behind a curtain and speak ill of others or in some cases write about others shortcomings well i never did nor do my name is owie[owen rosslind ]
to keith steinberg with whom i have had my fair share of dealings with get a life and leave the basil marcus incident alone and move on or continue to follow the correct channels to do what you feel is your democratic right in opposing him in what is his democratic right to earn a honest living in the country of his birth.this is not a threat but a promoise if you continue to pursue basil through the right channels and throw millions at your cause as you stated in one of your postings on a matter which is long done and dusted then i will pursue you in your slander of me through the correct channels of this game.
it is so sickening to read your comments you were the secretrey for 7 years of a big synagogue why big why not just synagogue you did this and you did that you you you you you you you you so either state the facts about your gripe and dont make threats and stop talking about what other people have to say about basil marcus speak for yourself otherwise leave it alone if you want friends buy a few dogs.
to selwyn marcus well done to you for standing up for your [ little ] brother.

I have read the very eye opening B Marcus thread.
This topic seems to have touched a very sensitive nerve.
I hope this explodes into the open, to allow the general racing public to form an opinion of the undisclosed forces that determine the direction of the racing industry.
Something to think about, regarding the jockey challenge between Anton Marcus and Anthony Delpech.
With all due respect to Anton Marcus, you would not have won this year's championship jockey title without getting some choice rides in the closing stages of the season.. Only a fool would believe that there were no influential forces involved.
To Anthony Delpech, if you get to read this, you are a CHAMP...continue to ride like the CHAMPION that you are.
You have given Marcus the lead with the new season...show him what riding is all about.

@Observer:
'I hope this explodes into the open, to allow the general racing public to form an opinion of the undisclosed forces that determine the direction of the racing industry.'
I fully agree with your point.
We, as unsuspecting punters / owners, have been obviously taken for a ride (and are still being) to suit the forces of certain elements and hidden agendas who have permeated almost the entire industry.
As a result, we have lopsided championships, decisions & results with individuals who are unwittingly robbed / denied of opportunities and deserved glory / achievement.
Basil, Anton Marcus or Steinberg or their grandfather.... this industry stinks under the unaccaountable control of a handful and about time Government's /HAWK's attention was drawn to investigate it completely and bring about fresh legislation to control and regulate it (in terms of the National Gambling Act... no exemptions). For one, no further protection of the industry because of the 'threats from other forms of gambling' whilst there is no explanation for the stripping of assets and profiteering for the benefit of shareholders to the detriment of the industry.
Am sorry, this wont go down well in the throats of certain 'praise singers' and their cronies; but, it's an indisputable FACT! Racing, as a sport, belongs to the nation (like every other sport); not a handful of elitists..... black or white!

So Anton Marcus is well-connected - WTF is wrong with that? He was the first to admit he had better rides in the final stages of the season than Anthony Delpech, and there is no doubt that the SA racing colony (jockeys included) was roughly split into two camps with some supporting the one contender and some pulling strings for the other. No offence was committed and for a few weeks the championship race had people even following Kimberley racing who would normally rather watch paint dry.
Both are great jockeys, but Marcus came from a mile behind to win easily in the end and he fully deserved the win, even if Delpech would also have been an extremely worthy winner himself. Owners, trainers etc can choose to give the ride on their horses to whoever they please, and if Marcus had some very "influential" people on his side who happen to own a large number of horses - I repeat, so what?

@magiclips:
'had some very "influential" people on his side who happen to own a large number of horses - I repeat, so what?'
No serious problem with that, with due respects!
However, when a senior official makes a media comment 'we control the sports of horseracing....' WTF?
THAT is totally naive, irresponsible (if not blasphemous), arrogant and should be of concern to all role-players!
How many within the industry will endorse such a statement? In which other horseracing country (besides maybe Dubai) do a handful of individuals control and direct the entire industry?
With the talk of the WC merger, why have suddenly a number of horses from 'influential' owners ended up in the WC stables? There is so much more which is not being exposed as the powers that be control the racing media also!
In other words, neither you nor I (or any other) can come out with a racing publication that 'exposes' unsavoury aspects, and have it distributed via the TAB outlets or have an adverse comment published in the RacingXpress supplement of The Citizen..... can we.... ever?
Sporting Post is a classic example.... denying others an opportunity of a share in the pie!

Well said Magic - Regardless of his rides and connections he still had to get the horses home - His ablity did that and my opinion is that if you gave those same rides to a jockey not in the top 20 a fair deal would have run second or worse - Why Anton is being brought into this is beyond me

WTF?
Why are vexing issues related to the topic being swept under the carpet with side shows & distractions? If the majority of forumites here vote for Basil, does that sanitise the forumites and make demons of the critics?
Marcus and delpech are mere pawns in a broader game that is being played out!
Just as one must not intervene when blacks are in an argument if you not one of them, that seems to be the modus operandi here also;
when Caucasians have disputes amongst themselves, non-Caucasians must steer clear..... not their business (that is the covert message)!
Really sucks all this talk about being non-racist, transparent, committed......blah, blah!!!
