30/1 anybody?
A bumper lineup awaits at Scottsville today with the inclusion of the 2x
grade3 features (The Sunday Tribune Godolphin Barb and the Strelitzia
Stakes for 2yr olds) that were moved ahead from last month due to a lack
of entries. These 2 complement the existing Sunday Tribune Umzimkhulu
and the Byerley Turk Stakes for 3 year olds on a 10 race program -
welcome to the KZN winter season!
As for betting on the day, despite being competitive we should be able
to sneak off with a profit because there's a few worth striking at
decent prices.
The first feature event is up in race 5 and it's the Godolphin Barb
Stakes for 2 year olds. Here the favourite Countless Times looks to be
the right one and although in the red at 9/10, he's the form value
considering the opposition.

The 6th race is the Strelitzia Stakes for 2 year old fillies and the
lead value here must be All Colours who is available at the surprisingly
generous odds of 4/1. Trainer Dave Goss tips her strongly to win and
it's not hard to see why. She won her first start with the 'wow' factor
beating the colt Furious Dancer easily with the rest of the field many
lengths back. Furious Dancer went on to win by a street next time out
and has since run 2nd on two occasions in features behind Countless
Times (odds on favourite to win the preceding feature today). Last time
out All Colours ran on from far back, flying through late for 2nd behind
the furiously fast Poppins (7/1) who also runs here. She's another at
value considering she beat All Colours last time out, but this time at
Scottsville with its uphill straight, she might find it much harder to
hold on. Interestingly the favourite is Wishful Eye (15/10) who was in a
race of her own when winning first time out by 8.50 lengths. The form
however hasn't been franked so she's too short in the betting if
factoring in the well performed opposition. From Cape Town we get
Maureen De Lago (2/1) in the mix and she's another with great form and
her races have produced multiple winners thereafter. There's no way to
gauge how the Cape form will match against the locals, but at 4/1, All
Colours does look worth a punt.

The 7th race is the Umzimkhulu Stakes and this should be a walk in the
park for the favourite Imperious Star (7/10) who has galloped her way
into the 'something special' category after winning her last two starts
like a runaway champion. She looks almost impossible to beat and can be
bankered in everything.

The Byerley Turk Stakes (race
promises to be an exciting affair even though
the Cape challengers are thin on the ground this year with only 3 in the
race. Nocturnal Affair has by far the best form of these raiders and
comes in with a lively chance but it's the KZN contingent that draw the
most interest. All of Clearly Silver, Lizarre and Two Tone have been
rated towards to the top of the KZN 3 year old pile and this race will
go someway towards establishing some sort of hierarchy with local 3 year
olds. Clearly Silver is being aimed at the Guineas (1600m) and this
1400m trip should give indication of whether he will be effective beyond
sprints; the feeling from the stable is that it should be no problem.
Two Tone is probably looking for further (has also been confined to
sprints thus far) but trainer Wendy Whitehead, although hopeful that he
will stay, has her reservations about this. Lizarre's last two runs were
in the Cape where he performed admirably at top level in the Summer
features, beaten by two of the windy City's best in Bravura and
Noordhoek Flyer (both early July favourites this year). This is a tough
race to decipher but the result is eagerly anticipated.
Champion looker, Champion Empire (pictured working at
Summerveld)
In the 10th race Champion Empire is an awesome looking specimen with a
huge stride and meets the sort of field here that should be well within
his measure.. if he behaves. He's a highly strung individual and can be
a problem to settle because he is prone to go tearing off and with his
high head carriage, he's difficult to control. I've been watching him
working over the last week and there's been tangible improvement in that
he's not pulling as much and seems to be getting into the zone now. A
big runner and value of the day at 6/1.
In closing, Imperious Star and Countless Times look to be the good
things but this is reflected in their prices (both in the red) so for
the get-rich-quick schemes, we much look elsewhere. Champion Empire and
All Colours are well priced in proportion to their chances so if you're
looking for a big payout, the two together in a double will yield around
30/1. Throw in Imperious Star to the mix for a treble and you could find
yourself with a 50/1 winning ticket by the close of racing today. For
the less hungry, try 2x doubles with (1) Imperious Star into Champion
Empire and (2) Imperious Star into All Colours. Best of luck to
everyone, now let's get out there and make some money!

Me do nothink! poor leon has to get his arse out of bed and get to the gallops,to take all the pics.
The racing publications and websites would be far more informative if they employed the likes of Leon and allowed them to work!

Firstly the weather. The sun is out. I don't think the forecasted rain will arrive.
La Pucelle is very well at the moment. We have to respect the top two in the betting but we have to remain optimistic
I personally DON'T think that she can beat the speed horses in the race. By the time LA Pucelle puts her stride together, the winning line might come too soon for her.
But having said that and based on her grass gallop on Tueday (when she could not have even blown a candle out), she will be running on at the finish and it will not surprise us to see her winning it.
She is a big runner.
All the best to Clan Members that have runners today and BREAK A LEG.
