Bookies
15 years 2 months ago
Guys - I am sure you all have experienced it recently, but it still is a shame. I have a horse running in PE tomorrow, priced up at 14/1. I phoned my bookie to place a bet (Hollywood) to take the 14/1 on offer. My bet was 10k. They would not accept it - only R 2100 to win 30k. They are happy to take our money but are very fussy when they are at risk. Time to change my bookie I guess.

You did well.
Bettingworld only lays me to win R5,000 online as does Marshalls. I get up to 20 at Fourie and LM.
I'm not even a formidable punter.
There's no such thing as one-stop shopping anymore.

The sorry issue here is I did phone in - then the operator first had to check with supervisors. Shocking! BTW - the horse is African Swift.

Bob, perhaps thats what Barney Curley meant when he said that "you couldn't get two bananas to a banana"

That is exactly what he meant, the only people that can get money on with the big firms in the UK are losers!

The more you hear about the issues, the more you realise that they are solved by betting exchanges!
a) limits dependant solely on liquidity of market which should draw large pools when/if transacted in rands!
b) no credit = no bad debts
c) bookmaking would open to anybody with the skill to transact,at all levels(no special BEE or Aff.Action needed) Computer,3G and a starting stake and you off!
d) prices driven purely by supply/demand
e) huge sponsorships (if BETFAIR are anything to go by)
f) betting 24/7 from the moment the event/race details are finalised
g) unusual betting patterns easily picked up and reported for investigation
Thats just some of the "ups" off the top of the head.
