Turffontein race 2

Ragamuffin 15/2 win R 4,30 ( 33/10 ) place R 1,50

Turffontein race 3

Mannequin 9/2 win R 3,20 ( 22/10 ) place R 1,00

Turffontein race 5

Hurricane Force 3/1 win R 3,30 ( 23/10 ) place R 1,90

Turffontein race 6

Precedent 28/10 win R 2,60 ( 16/10 ) place R 1,80

Turffontein race 7

Queens Bay 28/10 win R 2,60 ( 16/10 ) place R 1,00

The first race winner was returned 7/2 and paid R 6,20 a win but was freely available just before the off at 5/1 anyway.

I wonder how the people betting on the tote manage to find so many winners yet continue to bet through a medium that regularly returns odds well below those offered by the bookies. I hear that tote turnover has dropped by over 40% in some outlets but this is anecdotal evidence only. However, given the above should we be surprised if it is true.

I agree the tote is in serious trouble but we must bear in mind that the tote is pre-taxed therefor the discrepancy in dividends isn't necessarily as large as indicated.

I refuse swallow the reasons given for the tote payouts, and the feedback received, is a complete insult to any thinking man's intelligence. This has completely turned me off from racing, as much as I used to love, and stiil do love horseracing.

So I, and a group of friends, have drastically reduced the amount we spend per day on tote, and bookie bets....from betting everyday, we now pool together to take one bet per week.

While "P", may not miss this little drop in the ocean, at least we are getting gauranteed odds on roulette, and it is certainly becoming more profitable, been up against one croupier, rather then having to contend with, trainer, owner, jockey, misleading bookie odds, commentator calling, course, weather, stipes, starters, and to top it all, manipulation of tote payouts.

And we get free drinks + discounted holidays & accomodation and other incentives, while having fun at the casino.

So cheers to you "P", you ain't gonna line your pockets with my cash.
