Do Zimbabwe winners still count this year?

I read the stats for the Jockey's and Appretice's Titles this year and am still amazed to see that they include races won in Zimbabwe.

Now either our Racing Powers that be know more than our own politicians as well as those in the rest of the world as regards Zimbabwe but all Ive read locally and internationally points very clearly to a country embargode by the entire planet for its horrors against basic human rights...let alone animal rights.

Just because some dude born before the rinderpest decided to make Zimbabwe qualify as a venue where winners are included in SA Jockeys titles does NOT mean to say that it should have stayed like that forever.

Zimbabwe is not a province of SA although it may seem like that when one looks at our own resident stats..BUT PLEASE surely to goodness someone with a bit of a brain CHANGE this ridiculous pathetic rule!

It has to be one of the most bizzare rules ever!

The thought that must have gone into it boggles the mind...does anyone know who is responsible for it still being around and why?

Or is it just a nameless face called "they"

Zimbabwe racing has always fallen under the authority of the Jockey Club of South Africa, now the NHA. I agree it is an anomaly given that it is a different country, and it is debatable whether their results should count quite aside from political considerations. However, in racing terms it has always effectively been treated as another province of South Africa, even during the isolation period between Zimbabwe's independence in 1980 and the normalisation of relations in the early 1990s.

Again, whether it should or should not be the case is a highly debatable point, but the history of this arrangement goes way back at least as far as the days of the Federation of Southern Rhodesia, Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) and Nyasaland (now Malawi).

Oscar, it is a great help and boost to racing in Zim that jockeys like Derek David and Andrew Fortune ride there whilst trying to secure the jockey championship. Racing in Zimbabwe has survived in spite of what is happening there not because of it. Zimbabwean racing has always fallen under the jurisdiction of the South African Jockey Club (now NHA) and jockeys winners have always counted towards the SA title - nothing has changed.

Thats a fair point mate.

Would you know why the NHA do that?..surely Zim govt would want its own regulating authority?

The Zim govt is very happy to collect the taxes from racing and the less they have to do with racing the better for racing.
