PRESS RELEASE 25 MAY 2009

With just 9 points having been earned over the weekend, Michael Gramanie retained his 1 point lead over Sharmlin Govender. Gramanie’s top entry accrued no extra points and remains on 35 but he did walk away with the first spot prize drawn by Deez Dyanand on Friday night. The prize of R500 in cash was kindly donated by David Van Der Vyver Bookmakers.

Pocket Power (Jet Master) garnered 2 points for many entrants with his emphatic win over 1450m at Clairwood Racecourse on Sunday. This was a sparkling comeback run by the gelding generously dubbed “the racing public’s horse” by one of the co-owners, Marsh Shirtliff, and Pocket Power looks ominously on track for an historic second July/Met double!

Air Combat’s (Jet Master) third in the Gr.2 Betting World 1900 on Friday evening at Greyville Racecourse gave his supporters a well-earned 5 points and remains well enough handicapped to be competitive for the balance of the feature races this season. The only other horse to score over the weekend was Joey Ramsden ’s Bush Pirate (Russian Revival) who eventually won his second race after a string of high class performances in Graded Races. His Novice Plate victory secured 2 points.

On Wednesday at Clairwood Racecourse, all eyes will be focused on Race 8, a Conditions event run over 1450m when 5 qualifiers line up in what appears to be a prep for Dancer’s Daughter (Act One) following her return from a successful raid in Gauteng in March. The other eligible horses contesting this event are Buscador (Western Winter), River Jetez (Jet Master), Gilded Minaret (Al Mufti) and Prestic (Strike Smartly).

On Saturday, the scratching of Warm White Night (Western Winter) from the Gr.1 Golden Horse Casino Sprint, the first bonus race in the Charity Turf Challenge, is a blow and hopefully he will have recovered in time for the Gr.1 Mercury Sprint due to be run on Sunday, 19 July.

Gold Circle’s IT department are working on a means of allowing entrants to view their entries online and this will be communicated shortly. Charity Turf Challenge entries will be highlighted in the KZN and Western Cape official race cards from this weekend onwards.
