NATIONAL YEARLING SALES DAY 1
16 years 2 months ago
Take the Laird/Jooste exacta out of the equation and the prices paid looked pretty sensible for a change.
Somebody should do an 'average return per runner' across the entire Laird string -I reckon it must make pretty horrific reading! He still does not seem to have ever learned the age old racing saying : MONEY cannot buy you a good horse.
Well done to those of you who acquired stock - I spotted what looked like some pretty shrewd buys scattered throughout the evening.

Morning Garrick are you purchasing any of the bargains?
Just be careful in your t.v. room that you don't raise your hand and the bid gets accepted.

And it was a buy back....the sales should have 2 stats...that for BOUGHT and fully paid for horses and then for BUY BACKS as figures are totally inflated....

I made a lame attempt at the Western Winter colt - Lot 83 - but noticed that Robin Bruss wasn't interested in letting it go - even at R450,000!
In response to some of the other posters - these sales do little or nothing to contradict the underlying belief held by many racing fans that the process is 'less than honest'. I personally have often been perturbed to learn that the underbidder on horses I have bought have been the breeders or 'connected parties'.
It's high time all bidders were issued with paddles and be required to display them clearly when making a bid. Legitimate buyers could them immediately see where a breeder/agent/owner was bidding against them and withdraw. Furthermore I believe reserves should be listed on the electronic board together with the Lot # and current offer. It's absolute nonsense that we go through a process only to be told - 'Not enough'.

Garrick, I am 1000% in agreement. Breeders should also disclose in the catalogue that they are prepared to keep a share in a horse.

Two bidders across the ring...one gets the horse and the other under bidder signs...no names mentioned!

please explain, why should a breeder buy back, at enormous price, incurring cost of breeding as well as purchasing from himself (forgive my ignorance, this is a serious question, I cannot understand the supposed logic???)
