this has just been sent from the owner of Clapham Grand

Firstly our thoughts go out to Shawn Mackay from the Brumbies who was struck by a car at 4am early Sunday morning while crossing Umgeni rd.

Although there is a modest speed limit in Umgeni rd, there are a number of people who are ignoring the limit and it is creating a dangerous situation. We do not want people to be crossing Umgeni rd while leaving or arriving at the club. We will block off the parking bays on the opposite side of the road to the club. We will also not allow anybody to enter the club who has had to cross Umgeni rd in order to get to the club. Please park on the same side of the rd as the club as there is plenty of parking available, and we want to eradicate this problem.

I will be approaching the relevant authorities to try and have speed bumps and/or a speed camera to slow the illegal speedsters. About two years ago a young lady was killed in Florida rd after leaving a bar, and although there was much talk about speed bumps being built in Florida rd, nothing was ever done. I will not let nothing be done in this situation and will pay for the construction of the speed bumps if necessary. We cannot do anything however without there consent.

In the meantime, we will also employ two road gaurds to stop people crossing the rd or standing to close to the sides and to remind people of the possible danger. I know it may be an inconvenience to not be allowed entry if you park on the opposite side, but I ask for your patience as it is for your own safety.

A big thank you to our doorman. Dave Allen, who is a qualified basic ambulance assistant and who had a neck brace and oxygen in his car and was able to place the collar on Shawn, give him oxygen and make sure that he was not moved until the emergency services arrived. Also thanks to springbok forward Dr Jannie Du plessis who was in the club and was able to assist.

Shawns leg was broken and he has sustained head injuries the nature of which cannot be determined yet. The driver of the private security vehicle was caught and I believe charges of reckless and negligent driving have been laid.
