Frankel saddles 900th Santa Anita winner

PROUDINSKY, sent off the 13-10 favourite in a seven-horse field after Sartorial and Obrigado were scratched, ran to a near-length victory over 9-1 chance Ferneley with Medici Code another length back third.

The winner had finished second in last year's San Gabriel and was registering his first victory since taking the Grade 2 Mervin H. Muniz jnr Memorial Handicap at Fair Grounds on his seasonal debut in March. His victory was the 900th at Santa Anita for his trainer Bobby Frankel.

Jockey Rafael Bejarano said of the winner: "He ran real strong today. We were behind all the speed and we were going really slow, so he was dragging me along. He gave me a big kick in the stretch. We needed it because the five (Ferneley) ran a big race."

Frankel added: "He did his job. He's a nice, honest horse, not a top-class horse, but a nice Group 2 horse. We'll see what's next, play it by ear."
