Asmussen sets new world record with 556th winner


STEVE ASMUSSEN saddled his 556th winner for the season at Remington Park on Sunday, and in doing so eclipsed his own world record.

Asmussen has enjoyed a series of high-profile victories, thanks largely to his newly-retired flagbearer, seven-time Grade 1 winner Curlin.

Winner number 556 came courtesy of Prophesey, who won the first race on the card at the Oklahoma City track, a 71/2f claimer on turf.
Asmussen said: "We came from a small midwestern track, and I like to think that we remember where we came from.

"We've had a tremendous year, made possible by some tremendous opportunities and my outstanding help."

Asked if he could go on to gain 600 winners in what remains of the season, Asmussen added: "Churchill closes this week and Woodbine and Remington are right behind, so there aren't a lot of opportunities remaining, so 590 maybe?"

Amazing. I wonder how big his yard is and how many satellite stables he has. It must be a huge operation.
