FINDING OF A BANNED SUBSTANCE

The National Horseracing Authority of Southern Africa (NHA) confirms a reported Banned Substance finding.

The presence of Furosemide was detected, upon analysis, of a urine sample taken from Jockey S Khathi when he presented himself to take part in races at Fairview Racecourse on 20 June 2025.

Furosemide is a diuretic and clearly indicated as a banned substance within the Rules and the Rider Banned Substances Guidelines.  Diuretics cause increased water loss through urination and may lead to dehydration. Dehydration of a Rider may lead to confusion and poor judgement and could be detrimental to the general health of Rider, with possible renal (kidney) damage.

Mr Khathi was charged with a contravention of Rules 77.1.1 and 77.2.11 and elected to sign an Admission of Guilt.  A penalty of a suspension from riding in races for 25 days was imposed from 4 to 28 September 2025, both dates inclusive.

In arriving at this penalty Mr Khathi’s history of a contravention of Rule 77.1.1 was considered.
