Jockeys refusing to ride their horses 2024/2025 Season

3 August
Lerena refuses to ride
4 August
Khumalo refuses to ride.

In my mind refuse to ride after Vet declares sound. Immediate 1 week suspension for the Jockey.  No replacement jockey available 2 week suspension

There has to be something in the rules that allows them to do this surely?

They will ( or should) never get another ride from the stable though as they are making the trainer look stupid.

I stand to be corrected but I don't think Khumalo has ridden for Corne Spies again since refusing to ride William Robertson?

Safety... but I agree with a penalty for upsetting the betting and the consequences thereof, allows for manipulation.

Strongly disagree that jocks cannot take the decision not to ride a horse. Just imagine a jock gets forced to ride a horse that goes wrong in a race and serious injury or death occurs.

What then?

Does this happen overseas? Or only in SA ......
I cant remember seeing a jockey change at the start, unless the jockey was injured ..

I wonder if a jock gets paid for a horse he refuses to ride...after weighing out a jock gets paid even if his ride is scratched or is declared a non-runner....I personally believe every jock has the right to refuse to ride but I do think the reason for refusal should be broadcast immediately...punters then can decide if they want to modify bets....I think sometimes jocks refuse to ride because the horse is showing signs of being dangerous in running....unsound horses are normally stopped by vets...I must say that I've seen some jocks very upset when a vet scratches a horse for being unsound and they believe otherwise....its a difficult situation but really I would hate to see a hungry jock take a ride as replacement and get hurt because of an accident...I hope I never see that

ON ARRIVAL AT THE START JOCKEY G LERENA EXPRESSED CONCERNS REGARDING THE SOUNDNESS OF STORM AHEAD. THIS GELDING WAS EXAMINED BY THE COURSE VETERINARY SURGEON, WHO WAS OF THE OPINION THAT HE WAS FIT TO RACE. NOTWITHSTANDING THE VETERINARY SURGEON’S OPINION, JOCKEY G LERENA WAS STILL NOT COMFORTABLE TO RIDE STORM AHEAD. A REPLACEMENT RIDER WAS SOUGHT AND DISPATCHED TO THE START. THIS CAUSED A SIGNIFICANT DELAY TO THE START OF THIS RACE.

Upon arriving at the start Jockey S Khumalo expressed concerns regarding PILOT FLAME. The Veterinary Surgeon examined this filly and passed it fit to race, however Jockey Khumalo opted not to fulfil his riding engagement. A replacement rider was sought, however no suitable replacement rider could be found and therefore PILOT FLAME was subsequently scratched. This caused the delay to the start of this race.

The favourite in this race ran unplaced. Pilot flame was the second favourite, so even those that covered the favourite with the 2nd favourite were fucked. In this game, if you punt on the tote you are a mug, and nothing is being done to change this.
