# Vaal Classic Thursday 16 November 2023 – Comments by David Thiselton
RACE 1
3 BREATH OF MAGIC 6 LE GRAND CAFE 1 PIKE PLACE 5 JUDGEMENT DAY
Preview: 3 BREATH OF MAGIC is well drawn over a suitable trip and this rider has gone close on him before. 6 LE GRAND CAFE is by underrated stallion Gold Standard out of a Windrush one-time winner who is a half-sister to Gr 3 Matchem Stakes winner Reim and he is from a top yard with a top work rider aboard. 1 PIKE PLACE has shown enough to be able to earn here. 5 JUDGEMENT DAY is by Just As Well out of a four-times winning London News mare and is from a top yard with a good rider up. (David Thiselton 3-6-1-5)
RACE 2
6 KAROO GOLD 7 IMPRESSION 1 EXHALE
Preview: 5 GAMER was due to run on Sunday but if he does not win there he has a big chance here. 6 KAROO GOLD has run two good races and should relish the step up in trip on pedigree. 7 IMPRESSION is in and out but if recapturing his best form he has a chance. 1 EXHALE ran a fair race last time when stepped up to this trip (David Thiselton 6-7-1)
RACE 3
2 ROMEO’S MAGIC 4 VIVA BRAZIL 1 KAMBULU 5 FIFTH OF JULY
2 ROMEO’S MAGIC has proved to be competitive off this current mark and is distance suited but does have a wide draw to overcome. 4 VIVA BRAZIL ran well first time out the maidens over 1800m and from pole position should be a big runner. 1 KAMBULU is well regarded and distance suited and he should have come on from his maiden win. 5 FIFTH OF JULY has been thereabouts off this mark and should be again over a suitable trip. (David Thiselton 2-4-1-5)
RACE 4
2 FLYING BULL 6 RULE BOOK 4 PROFESSOR SNAPE 3 BATTLEGROUND
Preview: 2 FLYING BULL has proven class over staying trips and has been not at all disgraced in last two behind the classy Zeus 6 RULE BOOK needs a few runs to be at his peak being a lazy horse at home so he should have come on from his last run 4 PROFESSOR SNAPE looks to have ability and still has scope for improvement. 3 BATTLEGROUND has plenty of ability as a stayer and if able to overcome a wide draw has a chance. (David Thiselton 2-6-4-3)
RACE 5
4 RICHARD THE FIRST 2 SILVER TUDOR 1 TSAR BOMBA 5 GODSPEED
Preview: 4 RICHARD THE FIRST was far from disgraced last time in the Graham Beck when just seven lengths behind Main Defender and he has some good 1200m form too. 2 SILVER TUDOR should be cherry ripe and has a good form chance here. 1 TSAR BOMBA has shown a lot of ability and is consistent over this trip 5 GODSPEED won a good race the last time she went this trip and with a repeat of that could earn. (David Thiselton 4-2-1-5)
RACE 6
1 ESQUEVELLE 2 CHOCOLATE BOMB 4 PRINCEOFGREEN 3 SIBERIAN STEEL
Preview: 1 ESQUEVELLE is in fine form and having come into his own can win again although he does have to overcome a seven point raise and carry 63kg. 2 CHOCOLATE BOMB disappointed last time but if bouncing back over a step up in trip he will appreciate he could be right there. 4 PRINCEOFGREEN has some eye-catching form and should be there from a fair draw. 3 SIBERIAN STEEL has the ability to earn here. (David Thiselton 1-2-4-3)
RACE 7
3 DUENNA 1 COMING IN HOT 8 FULL GO 5 PARKER GETRIX
3 DUENNA is in good form and has a fair draw. 1 COMING IN HOT is well drawn and has a form chance. 8 FULL GO is drawn in pole and can go close if repeating his last start. 5 PARKER GETRIX is in good form and can be involved if able to overcome a tough draw. (David Thiselton 3-1-8-5)
RACE 8
11 DUNGEONS 5 MO THE MAN 3 FORT LAUDERDALE 2 BOB’S YOUR UNCLE
11 DUNGEONS has some good form and from a nice draw with a nice galloping weight he can overcome a three point raise for his last win. 5 MO THE MAN looks to have come into his own and from pole position can follow up on his last win. 3 FORT LAUDERDALE won well when stepped up to 1450m so is interesting over a further step up but he does have a tricky draw. 2 BOB’S YOUR UNCLE has plenty of ability and is distance suited but has a tricky draw (David Thiselton 11-5-3-2)
RACE 9
2 SWEET BASIL 9 EFFICIENT TRADER 1 SOUTHERN STYLE
2 SWEET BASIL won well first time out over 1400m and looks to have ability but she hasn’t raced since that run in May and she has a wide draw. 9 EFFICIENT TRADER is better than her recent form suggests and is back on the Highveld where her only win happened. 10 RISKY BUSINESS is well drawn and looks to be off a competitive mark at present. 1 SOUTHERN STYLE had consistent maiden form before eventually winning and can do better than her last start (David Thiselton 2-9-1)
RACE 1
