Equine Flu notice
2 years 6 months ago05 December 2022
To all Equine Owners, Managers, Veterinarians, and other Stakeholders,
The National Horseracing Authority has become aware of the limited availability of ProteqFlu and ProteqFlu-TE. At this stage it seems that the only available product from local veterinary suppliers is Equilis® Prequenza.
All persons responsible for the vaccination of thoroughbreds are reminded of the Equine Influenza vaccination programme as published in the Rules (Appendix I), with particular reference to the primary course of vaccinations:
1.1 FOALS shall be given a primary course of vaccinations consisting of 2 vaccinations, administered between 4 and 6 weeks apart, both to be given after the age of 6 months but before 31 July of the year following its birth. Both vaccinations must be the same vaccine from the same manufacturer. Subsequent vaccinations must be given at intervals not exceeding 6 months.
1.2 All HORSES on training or spelling establishments shall be vaccinated at intervals not exceeding 6 months.
1.3 All registered stallions and mares standing on stud farms shall be vaccinated at intervals not exceeding 12 months.
Therefore if one has started a primary course with a particular brand of vaccine and the same vaccine cannot be obtained to complete the primary course, the primary course should be restarted to ensure adequate immunity is achieved in accordance with the manufacturers guidelines and the Rules of the NHA.
The NHA does not feel the need to extend the 6 monthly vaccination interval for horses in training or those on spelling farms as there is still adequate amounts of Equilis® Prequenza available.
Any questions or for further clarity on the above, please contact the NHA Veterinary Department at veterinary@nhra.co.za
