Johnny Cane RIP

#844293
The ex-jockey Johnny Cane who rode in Natal in the 1950’s and 1960’s passed away in Morningside, Durban over the weekend at the age of 84.

He counts Tiger Wright, Charlie Barends and the Passmores as competitors and contemporaries and had many a story helping young apprentices like David Payne.

Perhaps his most auspicious achievement came after racing where he devoted his life to helping the poor via the St Vincent de Paul society. For over 50 years of tireless work he was recently awarded the prestigious Benemerenti Medal from the Pope - the highest honour that laity can receive in the global Roman Catholic Church.

RIP Johnny. You will be missed.
