Has Island racing been banned too. 99 % of SA bred horses exported and race there.

Don’t you mean 99% of Mauritian trained racehorses are South African bred.
The Mauritian season starts only Mar/Apr.

SABC and 4Racing sign major horseracing broadcast deal for daily talk show and premier live race days

Johannesburg, 26 February 2022

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) and 4Racing have signed a major agreement to ensure the sport of horseracing is again accessible and available to the broader South African public on free-to-air television.

The agreement will see 4Racing produce and broadcast a daily 30-minute horse racing talk show called ‘Racing Today’ on SABC Sport from Monday to Friday over a three-year period for 50 weeks a year.

It will also see 10 of the country’s top showpiece horse racing events being broadcast live in prime time on SABC 3.

‘Racing Today’ will from April 2022 be available on the 24-hour SABC Sports Channel on the SABC’s Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) service, on the Open View HD Channel 124 and on the TelkomONE streaming service.

“We are delighted to partner SABC in this multi-year deal to ensure the sport of horse racing returns as a regular addition to SABC’s premier sports programming. Having the country’s largest free-to-air broadcaster, with an audience reach of over 32 million across the country, helps us to fulfil our mandate to reach new audiences, grow participation in and knowledge of the sport, and make horse racing more accessible. Through the SABC’s coverage over the years of legendary South African horses like Wolf Power, Horse Chestnut, Jet Master, Sea Cottage and Pocket Power, and jockeys like Felix Coetzee, Michael ‘Muis’ Roberts, Pierre Strydom and Jeff Lloyd, horse racing became a premier sport and those horses and jockeys household names across the country. We’re looking to recreate that with the fantastic horses such as Kommetdieding, Jet Dark, Flying Carpet and Captain’s Ransom, and rock star jockeys such as S’manga Khumalo, Gavin Lerena, Muzi Yeni, Grant van Niekerk, Rachel Venniker, Craig Zackey and many others who are fantastic current participants in the exciting sport of horseracing, so the SABC partnership is a major and very important one for us,” says Fundi Sithebe, Chief Executive Officer of 4Racing.

The new daily talk show ‘Racing Today’ on SABC Sport will cover everything horse racing related, while live coverage of the best local and international races will deliver the exhilaration, drama and prestige that are synonymous with racing to SABC’s viewers.

Head of Sport for SABC, Gary Rathbone, said that “horse racing has long been a major part of the SABC Sport offering and after a long absence from our platforms, it’s great to have the sport of kings back on air on the Public Broadcaster”.

“Being able to feature South Africa’s best thoroughbreds and champions jockeys fighting it out in these iconic races on the annual calendar is something I’m sure will excite millions of South Africans who will now be able to access the best racing on offer live and free on the SABC,” Rathbone added.

Stephen Watson, Head of 4Racing TV and Executive Director of Discover Digital, said “this deal with SABC is a significant one for us at 4Racing and for all current and prospective punters and racegoers who love the sport”.

“We have been working with SABC over the last year and this partnership has already seen live coverage of major race days such as the World Sports Betting Cape Town Met and Summer Cup and the L’Ormarins Queens Plate, while we’ve also assisted Gold Circle to get one of the country’s biggest and most important race days, the Gold Cup, broadcast live on SABC 3. So we are excited with this long-term partnership with the SABC, which will add more value to punters, sponsors and stakeholders. The deal also bolsters our multi channel strategy through the SABC’s channel carriage deals with Open View HD and TelkomONE’s streaming service,” Watson added.

They continue to blow their own trumpet and pat themselves on the back. Meantime the people who contribute the most are left wondering. This divisiveness is pathetic and again impacts the very people who want to punt and watch their investment run. As OTA says as it stands now the best season of racing in every year will not be covered and screened to everyone because of egos and disagreement. What happened to Mr Savage and De Kock and others who waxed lyrical about pulling together to make things right. Oh sorry I forgot...we are just key board warriors. Yes we are and we happen to provide the money that keeps you all going. It smacks of the same song different singer.

@ 4 Racing TV people of 240

When will you start showing replays of the days racing on the repeat programming?
The replay package is very important.

Let me try and get this straight - one could either buy a 'Free to Air' decoder (at around R900) to watch all KZN races - no subscription currently payable to watch GallopTV (but who says GC won't change their mind in future)

OR

One needs to buy a different decoder (or can the Openview feed be watched on the same 'Free to Air' decoder ?) and subscribe to OpenView (haven't bothered to check the subscription) - for that you would get to watch the Gold Cup (but not the July and other KZN features) and the 'Racing Today' show

OR

One could just stream GallopTV (currently at no subscription cost - but again who is to say it will remain 'free' in future ?) to watch all KZN races.

Please help me understand - I am still a bit 'dof'

Channel 240 is not enough for me to keep DSTV. The product has gone backwards vs. 249.

If 240 is the best we have, i will stick to Gallop TV streaming.

In my opinion the product should be free. And to pay for 4racing TV and access to replays is not something i will consider.

240 is shite quality , content , continuity, betting , replays
Tabonline is faulty at best

For Frodo, don’t worry about stuff that may or may not happen in the future. Now, review your decision.

Yet another announcement about nothing more than we as 4Q are spending more money to take out a 30 minute advert on SABC 5-days a week. 4Q is not broadcasting their racing during the week on SABC but merely taking out an advert that goes on and on and on for 30 minutes.

What HollywoodBets and WSB need to do is take out a standard advert b4, during and after the 4Q “Racing Today” programme and offer viewers to sign up to a one stop shop for “Tote bets, fixed odds, lotto, sports bets, casino bets”

The patrons of Channel 249 are still waiting for 4Q to flight a half decent product of daily coverage of live racing. Is there anything that 4Racing had done that has not been a monumental cock-up?

Once again, Mary’s little lambs have no idea that Rome is burning and they are adding tons of fuel to put out the flames.

I’ll probably go for Free To Air for KZN.
For the other racing I may just have to pain away with Ch240.
