SA Tote
3 years 8 months ago
Some years ago I wrote to the Tote and requested, among other points, what Percentage
was taken from all Tote bets placed on SA Horse racing.
I received a very courteous reply from a Mr Du Plessis and I think he said the deduction
was around 21%.
I understand that this is income for all the costs incurred by SA Racing.
My question is what is the deduction for (1) Overseas Racing Bets and (2) Soccer Bets.
Would it be rash to assume that plus/minus 21% is out of proportion to the costs of SA Racing.
Can someone clarify for me.

There is an eye-watering 33% deduction on the Soccer perms.
I'm pretty sure overseas racing will have the same deduction that local has, particularly seeing there are some bet types that have both "venues" in their composition.

My initial thoughts are that Overseas Racing and Soccer etc cannot remotely have the Overhead costs of SA Racing.
I assume that in Annual Reports the figures are clearly stated?

Is the figure for local racing confirmed to be 21% currently?

In the days of yore horseracing non-exotic deductions were 16% and for exotics 21%. Can’t talk for football but I can’t see a 33% deduction in a three-results event.
